PREVENTION OF PRESSURE ULCERS IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

The PICOT is an intervention strategy that nurses utilize in handling healthcare matters to

promote efficiency and effective health delivery in handling specific patients. Here, the PICO by

itself stands for Patient population, Intervention or Issue of Interest, Comparison intervention,

Outcome, and Time. The patient population tends to achieve an analysis concerning the specified

identity of the patient and the health problem exhibited by the patient. The intervention segment

of the PICOT emphasizes on the actual treatment measure that a given nurse would take in

response to the achieved health condition exhibited by the patient (Cannon, 2015). The

comparison intervention is basically, a countermeasure or the recognizable healthcare standards

that are promoted in handling the achieved health condition examined in the population. The

outcome is the intended outcome of the facilitated healthcare attempt on the population. Finally,

the time revolves around the assumed duration taken in implementing the strategized nursing

intervention.

Following the nature of the health problem exhibited by the patient at hand, the

application of the PICOT would positively influence a potential ground for promoting efficiency

and effectiveness in the nursing practice. The actual patient population is achieved based on the

status of the patient. The patient is an adult African American suffering from pressure ulcers.

The African American is a female patient aged 45 years old. Given the nature of the health

problem exhibited by the patient, the main intervention practices that would promote a positive

response to her health condition encompass skin inspection by the nurse and cushioning. The

skin inspection intervention will involve the direct action of the nurse within the clinic. Here, the

nurse will attend to the wound through a high-level nursing practice and properly address the
wound. The next intervention would involve a lifestyle healthcare practice that promotes

cushioning approaches by the patient to avoid another.

The pressure ulcers is a disease resulting from high pressure caused by a foot wearing

wet pants, and improper treatment of the human skin. In this essence, among the pressure ulcers

related practices include keeping a wet foot inside shoes putting on wet pants, and improper skin

protection (Bryant & Nix, 2015). The pressure ulcers can result in foot damage, skin diseases,

cancer, and bacterial infection among others. In this essence, the achieved decision of the disease

is based on the nature of the symptoms that the patient suffered. The patient was having a sore in

her leg that resulted in a deep pain. Such symptom is a clear indication that the patient was likely

to suffer from the pressure ulcers. The most appropriate intervention is to involve educational

therapy for the patient.

The therapy is to advise the patient concerning the self-management healthcare that

would promote a positive result in her current health position. In this essence, the intervention

would ensure a decrease in the risks that cause the existence of the pressure ulcers in the patient.

The educational intervention would also engage accuracy in promoting a quality life for the

patient. However, the entire intervention is a long-term solution to the patient. Therefore, it

would take some couple of weeks then the patient will experience a positive change in his life. In

fact, the patient will be directed to inquire more information concerning the self-healthcare

management practices related to the pressure ulcers from the CDC website. With a proper

implementation of the proposed practices, the patient would achieve an efficient and effective

result for the educational-based nursing intervention.
