Iron produced from the blast furnace contains carbon which

metals
steel can be produced based on the amount of carbon present.
Aluminium oxide is molten and electrolysed using carbon
electrodes. The molten aluminium is collected. Cryolite is added
to the molten ore to lower the reaction temperature.

QUESTIONS
1. What is reduction? Reduction is the process whereby a
metal ion gains electrons to form the metal. Mn+ + né = M

2. Why are different reduction methods used to extract

aluminium and iron? The reactivity of the metal determines the
reduction method used. Reactive metals such as aluminium are
extracted using electrolysis, as they are more reactive than the
usual reducing agents used. Iron is not as reactive as aluminium
and its ore can be reduced by the reducing agent carbon and
carbon monoxide. This method is, therefore, used.

3. What method would you use to extract sodium and lead

from their respective ores? Sodium is a very reactive metal, high
in the reactivity series, so electrolysis is the method of choice.
Lead is much lower in the reactivity series and its ore can be
reduced by reducing agents carbon monoxide and hydrogen, so
this method is used.

4. Outline the steps involved in the extraction of iron. In the

extraction of iron, the ore (haematite) or iron oxide, carbon and
limestone are burnt in a blast furnace. The main steps are shown
below.

Step 1: The carbon burns to form carbon dioxide.

This week, we continue our work on the poem
Because I Could Not Stop for Death. As the trio
of travellers continue their journey, the speaker
notices some activities: the children playing in
the schoolyard during break time and the fields
of grain. What poetic or literary device is there
in the line “fields of gazing grain”? What is its
purpose here? The speaker brings a naturalness
to the procession by her observation. It is like
saying that going for a ride with Death is not out
of the ordinary.

We know that the carriage is not stationary

used to show that the journey continues. The
fourth verse begins with “We passed ...” but is
quickly corrected to show that the object, the

slowly onward, the sun, too, has been moving,
but at its normal pace, with no regard
whatsoever for what is happening to this
person. The speaker realises this, noting that
with the lowering of the sun, it is getting dark
and chilly; dew is falling. Perhaps now she
realises that her end approaches. The mood is
made sombre by this change. She focuses,
however, on the fact that she is inappropriately
dressed. Both her dress and her cape are very
thin and cannot provide any warmth. Do you
