DAM PROFILE DESCRIBING GENERAL TERMS

High Flood Level(H.F.L.):-

The maximum water level that is attained during floods

Full Reservoir Level(F.R.L.):-

It is also called full tank level. It is the level upto which the water is stored obviously the crest of the spillway is fixed at
this level

Free Board:-

To prevent the over topping of the dam during peak floods a sufficient margin water level in the reservoir and top of the
dam.

Gross free board:-

It is the difference level between F.R.L. and the top of the dam

Net free board:-

It is the difference of level between M.W.L. and the top of the dam

Dam profile describing General terms

Sluices:-

They are the openings extending from U/S face of the dam to D/S face of the dam. They are used to clean the silt from
reservoir or to supply water to the D/S of the reservoir. Also they decrease the peak flood in the reservoir.
Dead storage:-

It is the part of the stored water in the reservoir basin which is not available for the use and hence termed as dead storage

Gross storage capacity:-

It is the total quantity of water stored upto F.R.L. it includes dead storage also.

Live storage:-

it is the difference between gross storage and dead storage. It is amount of water available from the F.R.L. to the still of
lowest sluice.

Minimum Draw Down Level:-

It is the lowest level up to which the reservoir is depleted from the considerations of Hydro-Power generation
