Refresher Course on “Design of Tall Buildings”

Starting from 28th April 2018

Dear Sir / Madam,

As you all are well aware, a prominent thrust area of IAStructE is to ensure that the structural
engineering fraternity in general and its members in particular, have the requisite technical
knowledge and experience, updated on a continuing basis, to render professional service of high
caliber to the society. A programme of continuing education of practicing structural engineers in
the design and practice of structural engineering has been formulated and is being implemented
religiously.

In the recent past IAStructE successfully organized three Refresher Courses on “Prestressed
Concrete Design” during September - October 2016, on “Earthquake Resistant Design of
Buildings” during August – November 2017 and on “Bridge Foundation Design” during January –
February 2018, where many stakeholders participated actively. We have received very positive &
encouraging feedback from participants of the previous courses.

Under this programme, IAStructE is organizing Refresher Course on “Design of Tall

Buildings” starting from 28th April 2018, which will be concluded on 16th June 2018. It will be
a 32 Hrs course (16 lectures of 2 hours each). The lectures will be held on
every Saturday morning from 9.00 AM to 01.15 PM (with 15 mins. Tea break in between). The
venue shall be PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry, PHD House, 4/2 Siri Institutional Area,
August Kranti Marg, New Delhi 110016. There will be an expert faculty for each lecture. Course
participation fee shall be Rs. 7,500/- for IAStructE members and Rs.10,000/- for non-members.
Group discount of 10% shall be available in case there are more than 3 number of participants
from the same organisation. The Flier giving more details along with the Lecture plan and
Registration form are attached herewith for your kind information. Mr S. C. Mehrotra, Governing
Council member IAStructE shall be Course Coordinator of this Refresher Course.

In view of limited seats (maximum 80 seats), you are requested to quickly nominate engineers
from your organization as well as send your registration form duly filled in along with the

 ABOUT the REFRESHER COURSE
Since the turn of the 21st century, tall buildings with growing
heights, increasingly complicated shapes and innovative
structural systems have been built worldwide. The
performance and sustainability of these buildings have been
the focus of world attention. Various landmark skyscrapers
such as Shanghai World Financial Centre and Burj- Al-Arab
in Dubai have been completed, showcasing several ground-
breaking concepts in planning, architectural and structural
design as well as building services facilities. These also
include the application of innovative construction techniques,
new materials and novel analytical approaches.
India‟s rapid growth and urbanisation and escalating cost of
land has led to a critical need for creating „vertical cities‟ in
the form of tall buildings. With more than 40% of India‟s
population expected to live in urban areas by 2030, there is a
growing demand for residential and commercial space. All
stake holders including the real-estate industry is exploring
the vertical space to overcome these challenges. In the
coming years, India is set to be the next big centre for the
tallest skyscrapers in the world.
The Indian Association of Structural Engineers has decided
to organize Refresher Course on Tall Buildings.
The Refresher Course will witness presentations and case
studies of tall buildings by some of the stalwarts of the
industry. The event will focus on the latest new code of Tall
buildings IS 16700 – 2017 trends, challenges and
opportunities in the design, construction and operation of tall
buildings in India. This course will give ample opportunity to
all delegates to interact directly with the experts of the
industry and gain knowledge through interaction.
