Specific Objectives:
Contextualize the grammatical content through the theme and genre proposed – urban legend;
Comprehend the usage of past tenses in order to report events/tell brief stories.
Develop the ability of telling stories using the past verb tense.
Teaching Procedures
1. In order to develop this activity, you should provide students with research
resources, so either have this class in a computer lab or make them work in groups
using their own smartphones.
2. Start with a brainstorm about urban legends. Ask students if they know any, and if
they remember the story. If they remember, give them two minutes to tell the story.
Say that they are going to work with a very famous one. (5 min)
3. Introduce the Hikiko legend to students. Explore their knowledge about recent
adaptations (Samara, the character from the movie ‘Ring’). Ask them to read the
text and check comprehension. (5 min)
4. Explain activities to students and ask them to do the activities 1, 2 and 3. (5 min)
5. Correct the activities, explaining the usage of the past continuous tense and
reviewing the simple past tense and the simple present tense. (20 min)
6. After reviewing the presented tenses, ask students to develop activity 4 in groups
of maximum 4 students. Instruct them to look for two different urban legends and
explore the aspects present in the activity. Then, let them tell each other the urban
legends and let them tell about the stories, focusing not only on the language use,
but also on the characteristics presented. (10 min)
7. Ask students to do activity 5 concerning their written production. Explain they are
supposed to create an urban legend, or retell one they already know, using the
studied content. They should start the activity in class and finish as a home
assignment. (5 min)
