1. Art Piece:
India 1976 by Anthony Caro: This sculpture stands outside Old Main Theatre and is supposed to
represent the “people of India are pushing towards the powerful elite of the country”. This is an
important piece of art because it represents the collision of minimalist design and abstract
sculpting, something that Caro is very influential for forwarding in the art world. There are so
many different stories that this piece tells when you look at it from different angles. It is made of
sheets of hard metal, rusted. It makes a lot of sense that this is a piece of art that would be seen at
Western because at this school there is an interest in all parts of this school in acknowledging and
uplifting ideas and ways of doing things that aren’t necessarily common or the norm. This piece
was completed in 1975.

2. Haggard Hall:
This building is located right across the street from the Performing Arts Center and is attached to
the Wilson Library. Haggard Hall is named after William Haggard who was the fifth president of
Western Washington “College” University. He is significant to western because he was the
longest serving president with a twenty-year service to the school. He was also a symbol of
important growth for this school as the faculty increased in number and many of the buildings
that we now see across campus were created during his time as president of this school.

3. Child Development Center:

This place, located in the middle of the Fairhaven complex really symbolizes these ideals that
Western has been putting out of this school being for everyone. The child development center
takes care of children for students with kids and working faculty at the school. It was so
interesting seeing a playground in the middle of a college campus because I feel like that isn’t
something that you see across college campuses at other schools. Another cool thing that the child
development center does is it breaks down this idea that western is above everyone else, being
placed on a hill overlooking the whole city and all.
