Question 4
Read the letter about tips on being safe.
Dear Ossas,
Thank you for the card you sent me. I love it! You are very creative. How are
you and everyone at home? I hope everyone is in good spirits. We are all good
and looking forward to our holiday in Zimbabwe next month.
With regards to your request, I would be happy to give some tips on being safe
as I read up on safety to make a safety poster for a poster-making competition
that my school organized last July.
I am sure you are aware of most of the tips but I will tell you all that I know. To
start, don’t walk alone. Go out in groups either with family or friends. Remember
the saying “There’s safety in numbers”? Well, it is safer when we are out and about
in a group than if we are all alone.
Next, if you sense danger around you or feel threatened, scream loudly for
help. Other than getting the attention of people nearby, the culprit may get
distracted long enough for you to escape. Do not remain silent if someone tries to
take you somewhere against your will.
If you are lost in a shopping mall, look for more information counter or a security
station. Do not follow a stranger even if they offer to get in touch with your parents.
In fact, you should not talk to strangers at any time or even take things from them
no matter how harmless or nice they appear to be because we do not know their
intentions. Politely refuse and walk away quickly.
Be prepared for any emergency. Know the telephone numbers of your
parents or close family members so you can call them for help. If you are lost or
involved in an accident, you will be able to give their contact numbers to the
police or paramedics.
