HOW TO REDUCE AIR POLLUTION

Air pollution is bad for our health. It can cause cancer and damage
to the immune, neurological, reproductive and respiratory systems.
Therefore, we should do our part to prevent air pollution.

One way is by using our cars less. We could car pool with our
neighbours. We could also take the bus, train or LRT to get to our
destination. If your destination is only a short distance, you could just walk
or cycle.

Another way is changing our buying habits. You could cook your
own meals instead of buying canned food. In addition, for grocery
shopping, bring a cloth recycling bag. Try to go for items with less
packaging. You should also adopt the practice of reuse, recycle and
reduce in your life as much as possible.

Thirdly, try to find ways to conserve energy. Minimise the use of lights
by setting up your work or study space near a window that gets bright
light all day. This will ensure you do not switch the lights on.

Finally, unplug your electrical appliances when not in use. Do not

take long hot showers or baths as that too takes a lot of energy.

In conclusion, we should do our part in reducing air pollution. We

should try to use cars less, change our buying habits and find ways to
save energy. All these will go a long way in making our air cleaner.

Question 4
Read the letter about tips on being safe.

Dear Ossas,
Thank you for the card you sent me. I love it! You are very creative. How are
you and everyone at home? I hope everyone is in good spirits. We are all good
and looking forward to our holiday in Zimbabwe next month.
With regards to your request, I would be happy to give some tips on being safe
as I read up on safety to make a safety poster for a poster-making competition
that my school organized last July.
I am sure you are aware of most of the tips but I will tell you all that I know. To
start, don’t walk alone. Go out in groups either with family or friends. Remember
the saying “There’s safety in numbers”? Well, it is safer when we are out and about
in a group than if we are all alone.
Next, if you sense danger around you or feel threatened, scream loudly for
help. Other than getting the attention of people nearby, the culprit may get
distracted long enough for you to escape. Do not remain silent if someone tries to
take you somewhere against your will.
If you are lost in a shopping mall, look for more information counter or a security
station. Do not follow a stranger even if they offer to get in touch with your parents.
In fact, you should not talk to strangers at any time or even take things from them
no matter how harmless or nice they appear to be because we do not know their
intentions. Politely refuse and walk away quickly.
Be prepared for any emergency. Know the telephone numbers of your
parents or close family members so you can call them for help. If you are lost or
involved in an accident, you will be able to give their contact numbers to the
police or paramedics.

CONFIDENTIAL MID YEAR EXAM ENGLISH| 7

Carry some coins with you in case you need to use the public telephone to call
your parents. However, you do not need coins to call 999 during an emergency.
It is a free call.
I hope you find these tips useful. I will write again after I return from Paris so I
can give you some news about my holiday.
Your cousin,
Big Shaq
