Arteries of lower limb

Arteries Explanation Branches

Femoral A Origin : behind the inguinal ligament A Superficial br.
Ends : by passing through the adductor • Superficial external pudendal
hiatus • Superficial epigastric
A Chief artery of the lower limb- • Superficial circumflex iliac
commonly used for CARDIO- A Deep br.
ANGIOGRAPHY • Deep external pudendal
A Continuation of the external iliac artery • Muscular
A Continues as the popliteal artery • Profunda femoris
A Major relations: ( lateral to medial)
• Fem NV, Fem art,Fem vein, Fem
canal
A Artery of choice for insertion during
catheterization and angioplasty
Profunda femoris A Largest branch of the femoral artery A Perforating arteries
A Supplies all three compartments of thigh A Muscular arteries
A These two supply hip joint
• Medial circumflex femoral
art.
• Lateral circumflex femoral
art.

Popliteal A Origin : behind the adductor hiatus A Anterior and posterior tibial art. (
Ends : At the level of the lower border terminal )
of the popliteus A Muscular and cutaneos
A Continuation of the femoral artery A Genicular
behind knee • Supply several branches to
A Major relations ( knee joint) (lateral to knee joint
medial) - Nerve (Tibial) ,Vein
(popliteal) Artery
Anterior tibial A Origins : lower border of popliteus A Malleolar
Ends : midway between two malleoli A Muscular
A Main artery for the anterior
compartment leg
A Smaller terminal branch of the popliteal
artery
A Continues as the dorsalis pedis artery

Dorsalis pedis A Origins: midway between two malleoli A 1st Dorsal metatarsal art
as anterior tibial art. crossess ankle A Arcuate artery –3 Dorsal
Ends : proximal end of 1st metatarsal metatarsal arteries
spaces A Lateral & Medial Tarsal arteries
- Passes inferiorly to sole of foot
A Main artery for the dorsum of foot
A Continuation of the anterior tibial artery
A Joins Lateral Plantar art-Complete
DEEP PLANTAR ART ARCH
Posterior tibial A Origins : lower border of popliteus A Peroneal artery
Ends: deeps to flexor retinaculum A Muscular branches
A Larger terminal branch of the popliteal A Calcaneal and malleolar branches
art A Medial and lateral plantar arteries
(terminal)

Medial plantar A Arteries of sole of foot A

Lateral plantar A Both are terminal branches of posterior
tibial art.
A LATERAL PLANTAR Art forms
DEEP PLANTAR ARCH in deep part
of sole on Interosseous muscles, which
joins with terminal part of DORSALIS
PEDIS Art. In 1st Inter-metatarsal space.

Peripheral pulse Location

Radial pulse • Anterior to wrist, lateral to tendon of flexor carpal radialis

• Also inside anatomical snuff box

Brachial pulse • At cubital fossa, medial to tendon of biceps brachii

Femoral pulse • Just inferior to inguinal ligament, midway between anterior superior
iliac spine and pubic symphysis\

Popliteal pulse • Deep in popliteal fossa in back of the knee just medial to midline

Dorsalis pedis pulse • Proximal end of 1st intermetatarsal space between tendons of
extensor hallucis longus and extensor digitorum longus

Posterior tibial • Posterior inferior to middle malleolus

Carotid pulse • Anterior border of sternoclaedomastoid at upper border of thyroid

cartilage
