THE PAPARAZZI INDUSTRY
As in the case of George Clooney, who was accused of having anger-management issues, many
celebrities have to deal with paparazzi and the unfair (1)____________________ they make about
them everyday. So, how do paparazzi know where to find the celebrities? How are they able to picture
them in their most (2)____________________ moments?
The knowledge of famous people's whereabouts is (3)____________________ to paparazzi. Without it,
they couldn’t track their targets down to take their photos. In order to acquire that knowledge, they
need contacts, preferably on the inside, such as the person’s friend or assistant. Paparazzi usually

about them first. Also, they have financial arrangements with people who are close to the celebrities,
and they often make payments to these insiders. That is, the doormen, waiters, bar tenders, valet
attendants, limo drivers, and others who are in a position to know the location of the famous are

invasion of celebrities’ privacy; they only focus on the opportunity to (6)____________________ their
personal income by taking as much money as possible from the paparazzi.
Once paparazzi learn where a celebrity is, they compete with each other to get the most unique photos
of him or her. Typically teams of paparazzi surround a celebrity driving down a street. Sometimes there
are as many as 30 cars chasing a celebrity. While doing this, they (7)____________________ traffic
rules, ignoring red lights and driving on the wrong side of the street, putting their own, the celebrity’s
and other people’s lives in danger. Paparazzi also hide in trees and bushes around celebrities’ houses,

get caught and kicked out by security guards, but others who wait patiently for a long time achieve
taking a picture of a star or his / her children. The pictures are then sold to newspapers or magazines

However, by publishing the photos of famous people’s children without their permission, newspapers
and magazines are actually acting against the (10)____________________ that the media have
adopted. Human Privacy and Respect in the Media rules clearly sstate that “No photos or videos of
children shall be printed or broadcast or displayed without the written consent of the parent.” So, it is
up to you to decide if the paparazzi industry is really an abuse of the freedom of press or merely “the
price of fame.”
