The Camsron 'MU' flange is an intermediate crossover flange designed to provide
a means for testing both resilient and welded casing seals. As illustrated
above, the fIange is provided with a chamfer for welding and two pressure tast
ports (3 and 4) with a recessed melded asbestos ring (5) between the two pdrts.
The injection of plastic packing through the packing port (9) energizes and
applies sealing compression on the recessed ring. If a welded seal is applied
between the test flange and casing, it may be tested with hydraulic pressure
through test port 3; a resilient casing seal (such as 'CA', 'AW'. or 'F') may
be tested through port 4. Tha recessed melded asbestos seal ring (more coimmnly
raferred to as a 'P' Seal) also provides an auxiliary casing seal which may be
repacked at any time after well completion by simply injecting more plastic
packing through the check valve port (9). ,
The crossover test preisure can be applied at test port 3 between the weld and
rPt Seal provided it does not exceed the collapse pressure of the casing reduced
by-the customer8s safety factor.
Before installing the 'MW' or double pack-off flange, all burrs on the casing
outside diameter over which the seal must pass should be filed flush, and a
slight bevel should befiled on the outside top edge of the casing. The casing
shouid also be lubricated. For details on installing IP' Seals, see Engineering
Bulletin No. 24

ports and two ‘P’ seals. After iostaliing
crossover flangehaving two test
the flange, the iower IP’ seal can
bb energized through packing port 2, and the~casing seal (‘CA’, IAW’, ‘F’)
tested through test port 1. if the test is.satisfactory, the upper *PI seal
can be eoergized and test pressure can’ba applied batwaeothe t+o *P* seals by
using test. port 3. This pressure must not exceed the coi lapse pressure of the
casing that is being used ‘reduced by the customer’s safety factor. 1,t ~FaY be
necessary to inject aore plastic packing behind the IP’ seals to get a satis-
factory test.
While applying the crossover test pressure to test port 3, beg certain that the
lower seal is hot leaking. This would allow the higher crossover pressure to
be applied to the lower working pressure flange connection. To avoid this, .
check for pressure build-up through the 1-r test port ‘(1).

Cameron casing head and tubing head spools are available on special order with
double ‘P’ seal pack-off preparations machined into the botteni flange as shown
and described above.
Pack Off Either Unit in the Foilowina Namer:
1. Remove or unseat check valve in the lower 4 NPT test port(See
Engineering Bulletin 36) and install test pump with needle valve
and pressure gauge.

2. Inject sufficient packing (7650-8) through the packing port

,L
to get an initial sea?. Test to determine ho7ding pressure.

3. ATtemately inject packing and test until desired pressure

is he'ld without leakage. Any increase in the pressure reading
while injecting plastic indicates the plastic is by-passing
the seal and going into the test space.

4. Back out injection screw and .fil7 the port with packing as a
future reserve. If the test pressure drops as the screw
is backed out .repeat Step 3.

S. Beinstall injection screw and pipe plug in the injection port.

NOTE: Before bleeding test pressure, reatove the
pipe,plug, P/N 5930-3, from the pump
reservoir. Leaving the plug in the
reservoir could result ininjury~due

to'over pressurisation and possible
expjosion of the reservoir.

6. Bleed test pressure, remove test apparatus and leave check

valve in the unseated uosition.

7. KW Flanqe - Weld casing to fiange at chamfer provided. Unseat

upper check valve, install test apparatus and test weld.
(Leakage of 'P* seal at this point can be detected at lower
test port).
Double Pack-Off Flange - Repeat Steps I through S above;:,~
using upper test and injection ports. (Leakage of lower
'P' seal can be detected at lower test poti).

8. BJeed all test pressure, remove test apparatus and m-seat

check valve. Replace l/2* NPT pipe plugs.

The following items of equipment are required to pack-off and test

'MW' or Double Pack-Off Flanges:

Test puep, P/N 12410 and hydraulic oil.

:: Check va'lve unseating too7, P/N ZOCl3-1 (2 required).
3. Pressure gauge.
4. Alien wrench, P/N B72l-1.
5. Adequate nun?ber of plastic packing sticks, P/N 7650-8,
(See Page 4).
6. Wrench or wrenches suitable for recloval and m-installation
of l/2" NPT and 1" NPT hex-head pipe plugs.
