QAM Question

A constellation diagram consists of eight equally spaced points on a

circle. If the bit rate is 4800 bps, what is the baud rate?

Solution:

The constellation indicates 8-PSK with the points 45 degrees apart.

Since 23= 8, 3 bits are transmitted with each signal unit. Therefore, the
baud rate is
4800 / 3 = 1600 baud
Q. Compute the bit rate for a 1000-baud 16-QAM signal.
Sol:
A 16-QAM signal has 4 bits per signal unit since
log216 = 4.
Thus,
(1000)(4) = 4000 bps
SAMPLING:
A compact disc (CD) records audio signals digitally using PCM. Assume the audio signal
bandwidth to be 15 KHz.
(a) What is the Nyquist rate?
(b) If the Nyquist samples are quantized to L = 65, 536 levels and then binary coded,
determine the number of bits required to encode a sample.
(c) Determine the number of bits per second (bit/s) required to encode the audio signal.
(d) For practical reasons, signals are sampled at above the Nyquist rate, as discussed in
class.
Practical CDs use 44,000 samples per second. For L = 65, 536 determine the number of
bits per second required to encode the signal and the minimum bandwidth required to
transmit the encoded signal.
Solution:
(a) fs = 30000 samples/s
(b) 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 (L) = 16 bits
(c) 16fs = 480000 bits/s
(d) 16 × 44000 = 704000 bits/s and BT = 704000/2 = 352000 Hz.
