PROPOSAL

TO: Dr. Kelli Cargile Cook

FROM: Kourtney Moore
DATE: January 29, 2018
RE: Teaching Demonstration Proposal

For two specific reasons, you have asked me to provide you with 3 different layered literacy
category preferences in order to prepare and develop a lesson plan, teaching demonstration, and
collaborative report. First in this memo, I list my preferences, while explaining the reasoning
behind my choices. The rest of the memo will explain the project management aspect and conclude
with a reiteration of qualifications.

SOLUTION APPROACH/DESCRIPTION

This section will focus on my top 3 layered literacy category preferences. It includes my list of
preferences/explanations, research plan, deliverable plan, and qualifications.

Preferences/Explanations

My preferences of the layered literacy categories are listed below:

1) Critical literacy 3) Social literacy
2) Visual literacy

Over the past year, I have done extensive research concerning social justice, and technical
communication’s relationship with advocacy. I believe that critical literacy closely relates to social
justice since technical communicators who practice critical literacy create a voice for those who
cannot or do not know how to speak for themselves. This relates to ethics as well. The main reason
why I made this my first choice is because I have a high level of interest with activism and hope this
could become a continued project for future endeavors.

My second choice is visual literacy because I am a visual learner and instructor, myself. Also, last
semester in my Foundations course, I read “Cruel Pies” by Sam Dragga and Dan Voss and learned
that technical communicators are encouraged to replace text with illustrations or at least have both.
In doing so, it can help erase the issue of distortion or what the authors refer to as graphic lies.
Illustrations assist in making documents visually appealing, and depending on what the information
is concerning, it could possibly humanize the information, creating social literacy. I chose social
literacy as my third choice because I feel closely connected to and interested in social issues, and
social restraints, such as community members not knowing how to communicate effectively with
police officers in the community. I also have interest in collaborative classrooms where students
help each other to learn, working and growing intellectively and socially together.

Research plan

When I am provided with the literacy that I will focus on, I will start to research immediately. This
plan will include:
Reviewing previous research that I Evaluating Data
have already conducted Conducting analyses
Reviewing new research and methods
to present the information
Once the research is completed, I will begin to focus on my deliverables, which are listed below.

Deliverable plan

All deliverables below will be turned in on time and via Blackboard or other platforms, as directed:
Proposal Teaching demonstration and
Classroom discussion leadership materials
Collaborative report

Qualifications

As stated above, as far as critical literary is concerned, I have spent over a year already researching
information dealing with activism and technical communication. I am also a guardian ad litem
advocate, meaning I speak for children in court custody cases. This is an important qualification
because I already have some experience with the information and I care about the type of work.

Besides researching “Cruel Pies,” for my M.A.’s comprehensive assessment project, (alternative to
thesis) I focused on marketing materials. My entire project was about creating visually appealing
graphics, maneuvering text and visuals in order to create valuable white space, and assuring my
client that their marketing materials (business cards, brochures, and flyers) were socially sound. On
that project, I collaborated with a team of researchers, hence one example of my experience with
social literacy. I have experience and knowledge concerning all 3 of my choices, which is very
beneficial for this entire project, and my collaborative colleagues.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

This section will include the task, timeline, and resources for the assignment.

Tasks and timeline

Task Date
Research and course readings Ongoing
Proposal 1/29 by midnight 1/29
Classroom discussion leadership 3/26
Teaching demonstration and materials 4/09
Collaborative report Draft / Final 4/30 / 5/09

Resources

All resources can include, but will not be limited to print and electronic sources. Predominantly, I
will use scholarly articles for the above tasks, and use these resources by the specified date.

CONCLUSION

I am the best, qualified person for the critical literacy category because I already have over a year of
experience with the classification, which indicates that I will steer my colleagues in the appropriate
direction. My previous research and experience can prove my dedication and ambition to this
particular literacy. I am the mouthpiece that will artistically, proficiently, and soundly recite the
tune of the unspoken. It would be much obliged if my proposal will be accepted. I appreciate you
reviewing it, and will be eagerly and patiently waiting for a response.
