CORYPHAEUS EXCLUSIVE
A MESSAGE FROM J.K.
The vacation fun of the beaches, Mariposa, and other favourite
places, as well as the summer jobs, for most of us, are over for an-
other term. On behalf of the Students’ Council of the University of
Waterloo , I welcome you back to the campus and I wish you a
successful semester.
To the new Freshman Class, a special welcome is extended. We
are proud that you have selected our University for the purpose of
furthering your education. It is our hope that you will soon develop
an unquestionable pride for this young university, that you will suc-
ceed in your particular ambitions, and that these next few years will
be especially enjoyable and memorable for you.
“University” has many different implications to many different
people. For this reason, our purpose of being at university is often
misunderstood. For many it is an occasion for intense study; for
others it is one for “pure kicks.” However, in actual effect, “Wisdom
is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom; and with all thy getting
get understanding.” (Prov. 4:7). University is not a time for a vaca-
tion from life; nor is it a time for one to be irresponsible and apa-
thetic to reality. Rather, it is an opportunity - an opportunity to
more truly understand the world in which we live and the people
with whom we live. It is a time to take stock of ourselves, to develop
our ideals and to deepen our ability to appreciate.
All of this; so that we can make some worthwhile contribution
to our society when we are its leaders, whether it be in politics, the
sciences, engineering, or the social and human sciences. It is our
destiny to lead and so we should prepare well.
Jim Kraemer.

A LITTLE COLOR PLEASE

Waterloo is a young university with young traditions and new
ideals. We attending the school and realizing its fine qualities must
take it on ourselves to spread the name and reputation of the school
both far and wide. If the reputation thus established it to be one of
a university in which spirit and brotherhood runs high, it will be
necessary for each of us to do his part. Many will want to show his
affiliation with this institution by more than word of mouth. In this
light\ we suggest the following:
