D. Trenches for road crossing ducts are to be minimum 1.75 times diameter of the duct or as
directed by the engineer. After installation of the ducts, the trenches are to be back-filled
with native soil and compacted as directed by the engineer.

E. The line and level of trenches shall be as shown in the Drawings or as may be directed by
the Engineer. Before commencing trench excavation, the route of the trench shall be
pegged out accurately and the natural ground levels and lengths shall be measured and
agreed with the Engineer.

♦ The Contractor shall include for clearing the route of the crossing of all surface
obstructions and grading the route to provide access for his equipment and
personnel.
♦ Unless otherwise shown on the Drawings or instructed by the Engineer, road
crossing ducts shall be laid in trenches with minimum soil cover as specified in
the drawings.
♦ The bottom of the trenches shall be properly trimmed-off, bottomed and prepared
to provide a firm and uniform bearing throughout the entire length of the duct.
Care shall be taken to prevent excavation below the level of the bottom of the
duct and portions of trenches excavated below the grade shall be filled with

mm by the Contractor at his own expense as directed by the Engineer.
♦ Where rock or other unsuitable materials are encountered the excavation shall be
carried below the bottom of the duct for a distance of 150 mm which shall be
back-filled with granular fill or soft sand compacted to the proper grade and
density.
♦ Where duct trenches are excavated across or along asphalted roads, sidewalks,
stairs and pavements, the Contractor shall carefully saw cut the edges of the
asphalt, stairs and pavements, remove the hard-core and paving tiles and store
them for reuse, or cart away the spoils to tips as directed.
♦ The sides of trench excavation shall be vertical unless otherwise approved in

♦ Trial holes shall be excavated well ahead of the trench excavation to such depths
as necessary to determine the alignment for the trench. Trial holes may also be
required by the Contractor to determine the position of underground services
subsoil drains or for any other reason. Trial holes shall be excavated and
reinstated at the Contractor’s expense and the Contract Rates for duct installation
shall be deemed to include for all trial holes.
♦ All trial holes must be backfilled by same evening, and no trial pit will remain open
overnight. Reinstatement of trial holes also must be carried out as per the
approved procedure, at no extra cost.
♦ Hand excavation must be used where existing cables, water mains, sewers, etc.,
cross or are in the main roads, where traffic is likely to be unreasonably
dislocated by use of machine, or for reasons of limited access, or where
instructed by the Engineer. In other places, hand or machine excavation may be
employed at the discretion of Contractor.
♦ Excavation by machine must not normally be deeper than 150 mm above the
finished grade, unless the Engineer decides otherwise. The Contractor will be
held responsible for making good at his own cost all additional damage to road
surfaces and private lands caused by the use of mechanical excavators.

2.04 WIDTH OF TRENCHES

A. The width of the trench shall be sufficient to permit the duct to be laid and jointed properly,
and the backfill to be placed and compacted as specified.

B. Unless otherwise shown on the Drawings or instructed by the Engineer, the minimum width
of trenches for the ducts of 150 mm diameter and above shall be equal to the duct outside
diameter plus 750 mm and for all ducts less than 150 mm in diameter, width of trench shall
be OD plus 600 mm.

C. Trenches shall be of such extra width, when required, as will permit the convenient placing
of timber supports, sheeting and bracing and handling of specials. Extra widths and support
wherever necessary shall not be paid separately but deemed to be included in rates
elsewhere.

2.05 THE DESIGNS, DRAWINGS AND DOCUMENT ISSUED WITH THE TENDER
REPRESENT THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENT OF ADDC. THE CONTRACTOR

Surface Preparation - All concrete surfaces shall be free of dirt, dust, grease and other foreign
matter before coating. Cracks and voids shall be repaired or filled with repair material
compatible with the specified coating.

Coating system - The primer coat shall be applied at a minimum consumption rate of 0.2 ltrs
per m² and allowed to dry for a minimum of 2 hours before over coating. The intermediate and
finish coats shall be applied at a minimum consumption rate of 0.2 ltrs per m2 to achieve a
minimum dry film thickness of 75 microns per coat.

2.07.1 Internal/External Coating for D.I. Pipes and Fittings inside the Chambers
and Exposed Condition:

All exposed D.I. pipes and fittings shall be coated with hot fusion bonded epoxy
coatings such as (fittings inside the chambers).

2.08 RESISTIVITY SURVEY

The Contractor shall carryout soil resistivity survey to determine the corrosivity of the soil along
the pipeline routes. The results of the survey shall be used in order to determine the degree of
aggressiveness of soil. Soil resistivity readings shall be taken at approximately 200 meters
spacing along the pipeline or at the positions instructed by the Engineer using the Wenner 4-pin
method. Readings shall be taken at each test location at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 meters depth.

The resistivity of the soil at each depth shall be recorded in ohm-m. The CONTRACTOR shall
provide four sets of pipeline route plans marked up to show the variations in resistivity along the
pipeline routes within the following classes:

0 - 10 ohm-m Highly Aggressive

10 - 30 ohm-m Aggressive

30 - 100 ohm-m Mildly Aggressive

In excess of 100 ohm-m Non-Aggressive

Machine tape wrapping shall be applied for D.I. pipes installed in areas of resistivity less than

Part 3 EXECUTION

3.01 GENERAL

A. All preliminaries, construction, testing and commissioning for the water system shall comply
with the requirements set out in the ADWEA Standard Specifications.

3.02 IMPROVEMENT AND GEOTECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS

A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the completion of all ground improvement works that
are located underneath the Potable Water network components (if required) as specified in
the Geotechnical Ground Improvement Specifications.

3.03 WATER TEST PRESSURE FOR HDPE PIPELINE

Required test pressure Pt shall be as indicated below unless otherwise directed by

ADDC/ENGINEER:

Phase I Pt = PN where PN is the operating pressure

Phase II Pt = 1.5 PN
Phase III Pt = PN

The testing programme shall be performed as follows:

Phase I

Test pressure raised to Pt = PN for a period of 2 +/- 0.1 hours. Whenever the pressure drops
by more than 0.2 bar, water has to be added to maintain an internal pressure

Tender Addendum no.04
Construction, Completion and Maintenance for Infrastructure Works of Emirati Neighbourhood,

Tender ref.P126-T/BPS/028/13-P3

Phase II

Test pressure is raised within a period of max. 6 minutes to Pt = 1.3 PN for a period of t=2+/-0.1
hours, adding of water as for phase I whenever the pressure drops by more than 0.2 bar.

Phase III

Test Pressures returned to initial nominal pressure, i.e. Pt = PN within a period of max. 6
minutes. The valve is then closed.

After a period of one hour, the test programme requires measuring of the quantity of water – if
any – which must be added to raise the pressure back to its initial value (PN). The allowed
quantity of water to be added is given by the expression:

Q < 1/50 Di – 1 (litre / km.h)

Where: Q = volume of added water in litre

Di = internal diameter of pipe in mm.

The tightness of the pipe section is acceptable if the quantity of additional water needed during
Phase III fulfils the previous Q expression.

3.04 NON-TOXICITY REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL MATERIAL IN CONTACT WITH

POTABLE WATER

All material in contact with potable water shall comply with the requirements of ADWEA Circular
No. (5) of 2000 given in ADWEA Standard Specification No. W-C-SS-015.
