Course Description:
This course introduces students to special topics related to financial reporting with emphasis on
recognition and measurement of assets and liabilities. It focuses on the analysis of a range if
contemporary accounting issues within theoretical frameworks such as agency theory and from
the perspective of the conceptual framework used in setting accounting standards. This course
comprehensively covers international financial reporting standards relevant to reporting
problems.
Course Aims:
The primary objectives of the course are to provide students with:

 Knowledge of and practice in using the theoretical frameworks applied in addressing


financial reporting issues;
 Awareness of and experience in applying the international standards that deal with the
specific industries and financial statements items;
 An appreciation of the conceptual strengths and weaknesses of required accounting
methods and the determinants of the choices made by directors and managers; and
 A capacity to critically evaluate controversial issues in external reporting and contribute
to debates on usefulness and value relevance of financial reporting.

Students Learning Outcomes:

This course is intended to extend students knowledge of accounting by examining particular,


specialized accounting issues. By the end of the course, students will be able to;

 Have a working knowledge of alternative perspectives on the theorization of accounting


practice;
 Be able to exhibit technical competence in the relevant areas of accounting where
measurement and recognition judgments need to be made;
 Be able to articulate measurement issues related to the covered topics; and
 Be able to locate and implement the disclosure requirements related to the covered topics.
