Volumetric Flyash Sampler

Flyash Loss on Ignition (L.O.I.) or unburned carbon is an extremely good indicator
of combustion efficiency on most units. For this reason, an “in-situ” flyash sample
is frequently extracted for diagnostic or quantitative reasons. For years, one of the
WE SPECIALIZE IN
most effective means we have found for collecting a representative flyash sample SERVICES TO IMPROVE
has been the Volumetric Flyash Sampler probe. In answer to numerous customer BOILER PERFORMANCE &
requests for a sampler that is less labor intensive, minimizes operator interaction COMBUSTION, INCLUDING:
with a “hot” probe, yet retains the simplicity and accuracy of the Volumetric Flyash
Probe, we have developed a single point, permanently installed sampler. The
Single Point Volumetric Flyash Sampler has numerous advantages over other Specialized Boiler
methods of ash collection, such as: Diagnostic Testing &
Tuning
• Representative Flyash Collection - The fact that the sampler pulls an “in-situ”
sample guarantees that the results are more accurate than “hopper” samples.
Sale & Training in the Use
Due to the low collection efficiency of carbonaceous particles, flyash L.O.I.’s
using hopper samples are inherently lower than actual LOI’s due to the fact
of Specialized Boiler Test
that some of the carbon in ash is not collected by the precipitator. Equipment
• Safety and Ease of Operation - One Person Operation, No Handling of a Hot
Probe. The ease of operation of the Single Point Sampler promotes greater Calibration of Airflow
ash sampling frequency, which in turn, provides plant personnel with additional Measurement Devices
data which can be used to more effectively evaluate and trend unit
performance.
• Minimal Sample Time (typically 30 – 45 minutes) Comprehensive Boiler
The Single Point Volumetric Flyash Sampler, Part No. ICT-SPVFS-00, is Inspections
composed of the following components:

and Pointer Slagging
Elbow Connector (pictured) or
Stainless Steel Braided Hose

Filter Canister with 3-Way Valve Programs
& Aspirator Assembly (Jet
Pump, Gauge, Globe Valve)

The sampler is constructed of 304 Reduction
stainless steel, mounted on a
stainless steel flange, and is meant
to be permanently attached using a Pulverizer Performance
4” diameter flanged, sample port. and Capacity
An alignment disc, positioned within Improvements Including
the 4” sample port and welded to Fuel Balance
the probe provides added stability to Measurement &
the probe. The length of the probe Improvement
is site specific. Typically, the probe
is inserted to a depth representative
of the center of the duct, based on Fan Performance &
the traverse axis, relative to the Capacity Improvements
duct.

Volumetric Flyash Sampler
The sampler can be configured with the flyash collection canister attached to the
probe (as shown in the photograph to the right) or with the canister attached to the
probe via flexible, stainless steel braided hose (for applications in which the sample
location is downstream of the air heater, flue gas temperature <400°F). The probe FOR ALL TECHNICAL
is designed to swivel so that the probe tip can be rotated out of the direction of flow QUESTIONS PLEASE
when not is use. The probe has “locking T-bars” to secure the probe to the CONTACT
mounting flange to maintain probe tip position. A 3-way ball valve mounted
between the probe and the filter canister determines whether the filter canister is Richard Storm
pulling flue gas/ash or ambient air. With the aspirating air “on” and the ball valve in ext. 19
one position, the canister is connected to the probe and ash will collect in the
canister. When the valve is turned 90°, ambient temperature air is pulled through Mac McNeill
the filter canister to “cool” the canister and sample prior to removal of the ash ext. 13
sample from the device.
