Reflections on Observation Task 2: Teaching a Phonics Lesson

1. What program is used in your school to teach phonics?

MST does not use any program because the school is very old and there is no internet,
but there is a CD or DVD that the students can use it, and it is about the letters there are
many games on it such as matching the pictures with the letters, and pop the balloon that has
the require letter, etc. However, the students prefer to do the activities on other centers more
than the computer center because they don’t know how to use the mouse of the computer. If
they want to use the technology they use the iPad, they can open the painter and write the
letter, but most of them when they use it they listen to the Arabic music and this program for
the Arabic subject.

MST use a teddy bear to teach the students the phonics, and his name is ‘phoneme
frame’. She uses it to tell them a story about the new sound that they will learn it, the
students should focus with the teacher to recognize the new sound from the story.

2. How is phonics taught in your school?

The phonics taught in my school that MST use her teddy bear to tell them a story that has some
words started with this letter, after that the teacher ask them what was the new sound? The students
start to guess, if nobody knows the answer then she tells them the new sound.

3. What was the focus of the lesson?

The focus of the lesson was mostly the sound of the letter, then the words that start with this
letter.
4. Were the learners engaged in the phonics lesson? If they were, select (a); if they were not, select (b).

a. Describe the different types of active engagement activities that the

teacher used.

The engagement on this activities that the teacher used are using
the teddy bear to tell them a story about the letter, after they
realized the letter and the sound the teacher and the students trace
the letter on the air three to five times and then they trace it on the
mat.

b. What could active engagement activities the teacher has used to help learners
b e t t e r understand the lesson?

5. What types of activities did the children participate in during their independent centers that reinforced the lesson
objective/learning outcome? If they participated in learning centers, select (a); if they did not, select (b)
a) Describe the different types of learning center activities that the students
did.
The different types of learning center activities that the students did are
making the letter on the sand, and make it by using the cubes and 3D
shape, also they do some craft about the letter in the art corner, in the
reading corner they can read a story and search the letter that they
learned.

b) Describe two (2) learning center activities that the teacher could
have used to help reinforce the learning outcome.

The writing area and the reading area were the best centres
activities.
