EXPLANATIONS:
Event/Audience: We decided to put on this event to show appreciation for those who educate us and work
behind the scenes in the Communication Department. Professors who are recognized for their work tend
to stay at that particular University longer, continue to be engaged at work, and generally are more
productive. This appreciation breakfast can serve as a positive reinforcement to them by acknowledging
the hard work they put in every day as facilitators of our education. As finals approach students are not
the only one who find themselves stressed. This is a great opportunity to give faculty and staff a chance to
take a break and start their day off fresh with a nice free breakfast. Professors and staff members in
Appalachian’s Communication Department often go above and beyond for students, and such notable
dedication to student development deserves recognition.

Location: We decided upon the Parkway Ballroom because the space is large enough to hold all of the
individuals in attendance, it is formal enough to hold an awards ceremony where as a classroom may be
an awkward set up. Another perk of holding an event in the student union is that tables, chairs, and aux
equipment is supplied. This room also allows outside food and beverage.

Date: We chose this date because even though reading day is a low attendance day for staff we believe it
to be the most open day and the best chance for high attendance.

Time: We decided 7:30 for a start time because it allows people who must be at their jobs by 8am time to
stop in. We have the event running until 10 so there is ample time for people to drop in as well as time to
give out awards in the middle of the event. This time frame also gives faculty and staff time to mingle
with each other.

Food: We want Boone Bagelry as our food provider for a couple of reasons. To start we like the idea of
staying local. Boone Bagelry is also in a great location which saves us time the day of the event. They
have many options in bagels for people to choose from and the mess is minimal. They also offer options
for those with food restrictions. On top of all of that the price is very reasonable. We also chose Chick-
Fil-A because they have provided food for the school in the past and could provide us with nice fruit trays
and reasonably priced coffee.

Supplies: We chose Walmart to get almost all of our supplies. The reason for this is mostly price and
variety. Walmart has just about everything we need at a reasonable price. This means we only have to
make one trip to get all of the supplies.

Hosts: The event will be put on by the Communication Honors Society (Lamda Pi Eta) we chose this
group because it is the student group most directly related to the communication department.

Awards: We picked two big awards (Distinguished Communication Faculty Member Award and
Distinguished Communication Staff Award) over several small because we thought it would give more
suspense and be more meaningful to those receiving the awards.

Polling for awards: We decided to go to each class and poll in person so that we could get a large amount
of response. It is much easier to ignore an email than someone face to face.
Invitations to the event: We decided to give out invitations personally to faculty and staff. This decision
was made so that they felt a connection with us and put a friendly face to the event. We hope that this will
help increase attendance.

OTHER: Leftover food (untouched) will be donated to the Hunger Coalition.
