School Board Meeting: Review

The meeting I chose to review was a regular board meeting that was held on June 23,

2016, at 4p.m. Unfortunately, the live video was not attainable but the agenda, pdf, and MP3 files

were available to save the day. My final thoughts about the meeting are positive, I enjoyed

reading and listening to all of the topics that are brought forth to discuss. I think it is great that

this is all available for the public to view, and if one day someone would like to speak at one of

these meeting they are entitled to do so. There was a variety of topics spoken upon so I will

briefly note a few that I felt were most important and/or relevant to chapter 1 of our textbook.
SCHOOL BOARD MEETING 3

School Board Meeting

1. 5.03 college career promise

Memorandum of understanding between CCSD and CSN

A. Discussion and possible to approve College Career Promise

i. This is a collaboration between CCSD and CSN to prepare students for current
workforce here in Southern Nevada
ii. Will provide the opportunity to stack credits, and guided pathways to an
Associates Degree.
iii. It will be accessible from June 2016-June 2018
I think that this incentive is great! The school board policies are vital in agreements such as this
one. Both CCSD and CSN have implemented their own set of rules and in order to combine the
two it is necessary to properly guide the everyday actions of everyone.

2. 5.07 Grant application: New Hire teacher incentive

Providing financial incentives to newly hired teachers

i. The incentive is for the attempt to keep teachers in the Title 1 schools, or a
school that has received one of the lowest scores.
ii. The incentive will give the teachers a bonus of $5,000.
iii. This will only be available to teachers who are hired at such selected schools.
This is another amazing incentive! The Nevada Department of Education in need of teachers. In
order to meet this need, the Senate Bill 511 Section 12th they have submitted over $8 million
dollars towards this. This will involve contracts, and federal law Obligation of Contracts
Clause.

3. 5.17 Performance contracts

Investing in new energy efficient services.

i. 50 schools will be using energy conserving services here in CCSD.

ii. The board will invest $20 million dollars, and they will get it back within a
period of 10 years.
SCHOOL BOARD MEETING 4

iii. The Nevada Department of Energy will give back $500,000 in credits, and is
qualified to to receive over $1 million in rebates through NV Energy, Southwest
Gas, and the Las Vegas Valley Water District.
I chose to reference this topic because in the beginning of the meeting there was a teacher who
was allowed to speak and she wanted to thank the board on behalf of her class. Her class was the
one who as a group brought forth this incentive for the board to review. It is super cool and will
be a major impact on the community, they are setting a great example to everyone!
