COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course focuses on the nature and relevance of philosophy in today’s society. It provides an
introductory discussion on what philosophy means, its methods, and applications in the daily lives of human
beings. It puts the human being at the center of the discussion, exploring his/her freedom and complexity
as an embodied spirit and also his/her role in the environment and society.

Lesson 1: What is Philosophy?


Lesson 2: Methods of Philosophizing
Lesson 3: The Human Person as an Embodied Spirit
Lesson 4: The Human Person in the Environment
Lesson 5: Freedom of the Human Person
Lesson 6: Intersubjectivity
Lesson 7: The Human Person in the Society
Lesson 8: Human Persons as Oriented Towards their Impending Death

Graded Recitation

Term Paper (Own Life Philosophy – one page only) 25%

CLASS RULES

1. Attend classes regularly and promptly. Participate in class discussions too. Do not be shy.

2. Inform the professor in advance of your absence. Please contact me beforehand (or soon
afterward in case of an emergency) if you need to miss class for a documented
emergency or other excused absences.
3. Excessive lateness will affect your participation grade. THREE instances of arriving ten
more minutes late will count as an absence.

4. Cell phones, laptop computers, and other electronic devices must always be turned off and kept
out of sight EXCEPT FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES.

5. Do your requirements intelligibly and cite sources properly. No late outputs. Be good stewards of
the talents and blessings God gave you such as time.
