Practice Philosophy and Organization

RACE HORSE PHILOSOPHY

Move through practice quickly, enthusiastically, and efficiently. A multiple offense has alot to cover during
each practice and it is our belief that a high school practice should be kept to 120 - 150 minutes. Therefore,
during practice, we move along at a fast pace, while still getting quality repetitions. Each coach is expected to
be enthusiastic, positive, and extremely efficient in his usage of time.

The basic ingredients of the Wing-T Race Horse Philosophy are

I. One bag for every two players.

a) This means at least half of the lineman will perform the drill at a time.
b) This allows a lot of quality repetitions in a shorter amount of time.
c) Lots of quality repetitions = Technique mastery

II. Easy to Remember Terminology

a) The first step that goes with a certain technique is called the same name as that technique. That
technique & step name is also used in the play call.
1. A Reach step is the 1st step for the Reach block
2. The Reach block is used in the play "Liz 28 Reach"

III. Easy to learn progression of drills

a) Makes our system of blocking easy to learn and execute.
b) Set the drills up in an easy to learn sequence, working from simple to complex.
c) Be sticklers for perfection and detail, take great pride in perfection.

IV. Coach on the Fly

a) Create buzzwords to correct mistakes. The drill or play never stops to correct one player. The
correction has to happen while the drill is happening.
b) If the correction takes explanation, sub the player out.

VI. Three plays per minute.

a) Goal is to run 3 plays per minute...but 2 plays per minute is great.

PRACTICE ORGANIZATION
We breakdown the individual period and perform the following drills.
I. Stance & First Step
We like to perform this under the "FunHouse" (chutes) if time permits.
a) Stance and alignment
b) First Step
1. On (Straight Ahead)
2. Reach (uncovered & covered)
3. Gap-Down
4. Pulls (trap, log, hook)
5. Fill
6. Escape
c) Get offs
7
II. Shoulder Skills
This focuses on the contact phase of the block, which is a transition from shoulder to
elevation & finish of the defensive player.
1. Surface
2. Strike a blow --> Rapid Fire
3. Step and hit (three phase progression)
4. Gap & Down Blocks
5. Hit and Finish (use boards later in season)
6. Run and Hit
III. Sled Progression (B.E.E.F.)
a) Blastoff: 6 inch first step
b) Execute: 2nd step in the crotch; Surface fit.
c) Elevate: 3rd step; lift defender up & under shoulder pads
d) Finish: Flip defender on his back.
IV. Individual Blocks
1. On (fit & Drive) 5. Log
2. Reach 6. Hook
3. Gap-Down 7. Fill for Puller
4. Trap 8. Escape
IV. Combo Blocks
We like to perform this under the "FunHouse" (chutes) if time permits.
a) Double Teams
b) Double & Kick (G & O pulls)
c) Belly Queen (cross block)
d) Fold & Gut
e) G.O. Drill (sweep)
f) GO Pass Drill (waggle)

We use standing dummies (bags) and shields because it is more efficient. Only 5 lineman can get reps on our
sled. Shields offer the perfect feel of a fit position on a block. It also cuts down on injuries.

The Five Phases of Performing a Block

a. Stance
b. Blastoff
This is the first step. It is extremely important, should be short, and should open up your hips up in the
direction you need to go. We coach 6" power step & flat back during this phase.
c. Execute
This is the second step & when contact is initiated. We want to step in the crotch of the defender with
contact initiated at belt level. This puts us in a great leverage position.
d. Elevate
We use the 3rd step to lift the defender. Once upright, he is very easily moved.
e. Finish

DRILL ORGANIZATION

Homer's Dairy

We do all of our shoulder skills, individual, and combo blocks on Homer's Dairy. The squares are 5 by 5 yards
squares and each bag should be placed where each line intersects. Players should line up according to position
and the coach stands behind the players performing each drill and is in perfect positions to correct each player
more efficiently.

The following are the way that the single block teaching would look on a Homer's Dairy. All players would be
doing the same block at the same time in practice. We have illustrated the different blocks to save space.

INSTALLATION SCHEDULES
We spend spring & summer introducing our players to all the drills needed to install the offense. This allows us to move
along at a pretty fast pace during August installation. Our teaching methodology is
Whole --> Part --> Whole.
We introduce all 16 plays to the team during Spring, out of 1 or 2 formations, so that they can see the big picture of
where we are going.
In the summer (12 practices + 2 camps) we commit to technique and teaching the drills. We continue this committment
to technique during our 20 August practices, however, we also start introducing the whole again as we are installing 1
play per day.
