AACC #5: Should Artificial Intelligence be regulated?

Annotations

● Several respected scholars and technology leaders warn that AI is on the path to

turning robots into a master class that will subjugate humanity, if not destroy it.

● Others fear that AI is enabling governments to mass produce autonomous

weapons--"killing machines"--that will choose their own targets, including

innocent civilians.

● Renowned economists point out that AI, unlike previous technologies, is

destroying many more jobs than it creates, leading to major economic

disruptions.

● AI is believed by some to be on its way to producing intelligent machines that will

be far more capable than human beings

● Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, tweeted that: "We need to be super careful with

AI. Potentially more dangerous than nukes."

● "I'm increasingly inclined to think there should be some regulatory oversight [of

AI], maybe at the national and international level."

● Most important, one must take into account that restrictions on the development

of AI as a field are likely to impose very high human and economic costs.

● These developments by themselves are not the main concern; job destruction

has occurred throughout human history, from the weaving loom replacing

hand-weaving, to steam boats displacing sail boats, to Model T cars destroying

the horse-and-buggy industries.

● Help launch and nurture a nationwide public dialogue about what course the

nations people favor, or can come to favor.

Abstract

The article starts off by introducing the growing market and concern for Artificial

Intelligence. It mentions previous landmarks achieved by research and development

companies such as Google and DeepBlue. The author then introduces the growing

concern and controversial topics of the consequences of Artificial Intelligence getting

out of control because of the exponential rate of learning at which these machines can

learn. It goes on to introduce the topic of autonomous killing machines and how they

can play a role in mass military and possibly the destruction of humanity. The author

then discusses the possible event of a job collapse in markets that can be replaced by

machines. It mentions that this has happened before with the industrial revolution and

will happen again with artificial intelligence. The article concludes by suggesting that

the Cyber Age Commission could provide public hearings for people to give their input

and perspective on this important issue.

Contextual Connection

I strongly agree with the points argued on the need for regulations on Artificial

Intelligence. The article included positions from both sides of the thesis question and

included perspectives that different people may have on this issue. I never fully

understood the growing concern of jobs being replaced by AI until I read this article. It is

a very controversial topic, but as the article states, we have been seeing jobs being

replaced by machines while new jobs are emerging. This text is directly related to my

topic and hits all the main points concerning the implications and repercussions of

Artificial Intelligence.
