Professor Colin DeYoung

Department of Psychology
College of Liberal Arts
N422 Elliott Hall
75 East River Road
Minneapolis, MN 55455 Personal and Confidential

Dear Professor DeYoung,

As detailed in the July 12, 2016 findings letrer from the University's Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action (EOAA)
office, their investigation has substantiated that you engaged in behavior in violation of university sexual harassment and
EOAA policies in your role as a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology. You met with us on
August 29, 2016 in response to our notice of proposed discipline.

The department and the college are committed to ensuring a workplace and learning environment that is free from
harassment and discrimination. As an educational institution, we are genuinely concerned about the negative impact these
behaviors can have on our students and on the academic environment. In response to the findings, the following
disciplinary action and sanctions will be implemented:

I) This response constitutes a letter of formal reprimand, as specified by the Board of Regents Policy: Faculty
Tenure, Section 10.22. Future incidents of the same or similar nature will result in further disciplinary action
likely to include suspension or termination. Please review the enclosed relevant section of the tenure code to
understand your rights to grieve this reprimand.

2) Merit pay for the coming 2016/2017 academic year will be withheld. You will be eligible for merit pay
consideration, but not special merit, again in the 2017/2018 academic year.

3) You are required to participate in sexual harassment training as designated by the college's human resources
department by or before December 31, 2016. Successful completion of this training must be reported to the
college and department no later than January 9, 2017.

Additionally, during the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 academic years:

4) You will be ineligible for internal competitive awards at the university, college and departmental level.

5) You will be unable to assume PIB area directorship or other roles of administrative leadership in the department,
college, or university. Service on the Psychology Department's Appointments Committee and as a CLA
Assembly member, including participation on the Course Review Committee, may continue.

6) New graduate student advisees and postdoctoral trainees will not be assigned to you. We understand that you
recently were awarded a grant that includes a postdoctoral position. Direct supervision for the position will be
assigned to another faculty member.

7) Outside of departmentally organized events and professional conference-sponsored events, you are expected to
conduct all teaching, advising, and other academic pursuits with current or prospective studenl5 on campus. You
are also e x ~ to_ re~in from hosting social gatherings where University of Minnesota students will be present
and ~ show d1scret10~ m the presence of students from other institutions (see # 11 below).
Driven to Discover'"
Adherence to the above sanctions and expectations will be regularly monitored over the course of the next two years. At
that time, a determination will be made as to whether or not continued monitoring is required. Department Chair, Monica
Luciana, will work with you to develop a plan for routine check-ins. While these specific sanctions will then be lifted
barring any same or similar incidents, the expectation that you comply with all University policies is continuous.

In addition to this reprimand and sanctions, the following on-going changes and expectations will apply:

8) You will be removed from any position that involves advising, evaluating or distributing resources
should not be removed from projects (including first year project) on which
worked and is to maintain the opportunity to complete that work with appropriate credit as a first author
on manuscripts.

9) You are to refrain from discussing or disclosing

Discussions with other faculty members at the University of Minnesota
are not prohibited but are not recommended given the potential for unintended retaliation

I0) Your ongoing advising relationships will be monitored by the Department and, if necesSIIJ)', by the College of
Liberal Arts.

11) Since alcohol was a factor in the interactions described in the investigation, you are expected to show restraint
when consuming alcohol or other legally-sanctioned mind altering substances while interacting with current or
prospective University of Minnesota students or other trainees as well as students from other institutions. From a
student's perspective, any interaction with you (even one that occurs in a social setting) can be construed as a
professional interaction given the power differential between your roles.

12) Since personal/professional boundaries were also at issue, we take this opportunity to remind you of the university
policy regarding nepotism and personal relationships:
https://regents.urnn.edu/sites/regents.umn,edu/files/policies/Nc;potism%26Personal.pdf.

While these are substantial measures, they are achievable and commensurate with the findings of the investigation. Your
July 15, 20 I 6 memo responding to the EOAA report is also noted and will be kept with the investigation file. Any form of
retaliation against those participating in this investigation is prohibited. We expect that you will take these
recommendations seriously as an established faculty member in the college and an important member of the Department
of Psychology.
