HISTORY

― Michael Crichton

The first telegraph line in india has started in 1850 by British east india company, 6 years
after the 1st long distance telegraph line in the USA . The 1st long distance telegraph line was
between washington DC and baltimore and the first words sent on the line were : “WHAT
HAD GOD WROUGHT!” a sentence from Book of numbers in the old testament.

The first words on a telephone line ever , was by Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the
telephone, made on March 10, 1876. First words ever, by Thomas Watson: ” Mister Watson
….come here ….I want to see u…” What were the first words ever spoken on an Indian
Telephone line was never to be guessed, but the 1st call is recorded.

Soon after Grahambell made the first call, to be exact, On 28 January 1882, about 6 years
after Graham bells first call , Major E. Baring, of the imperial govt in India commissioned the
first Telephone Exchanges in Calcutta, Bombay and Madras. The exchange in Calcutta
named the “Central Exchange” had a total of 93 subscribers in its early stage. BSNL History
could be dated back to this historic event in Indian telecom.

Indian Postal & Telegraph engineers were one of the most sought after engineers in the entire
world during WW-I & WW-II due to their workmanship and technical abilities, They have
been involved in many an assignment overseas. We at bsnlnews.com believe that
preservation of the rich heritage of indian telecom industry History and BSNL is essential .
We would bring more interesting articles on this rich history.

enterprises in India. It will facilitate various organizations to quickly induct IT enabled
services within their organizations without the hassles of setting up and maintaining their

Communications and Information Technology (IT) said, “Technology sets certain demands
and expectation on the Government when government aims to deliver more interactive
services through E-Governance when interacting with the citizens, institutions and business

shortly.”
Shri Rajesh Wadhwa, Director CFA BSNL Board said “BSNL had conceptualized the setting
up of IDC 2 years ago recognizing that BSNL had lot of vacant building space equipped with
optical fibre based reliable bandwidth which could be gainfully leveraged for providing Data

innovated a model of public-private partnership wherein core competence of BSNL as a
leading communication service provider and the core competence of a partner with
international experience in the field of Data Center services could be leveraged to provide
Data Center and IT solution services that would generate a new revenue stream for BSNL. It
is learnt that this model of BSNL is now being emulated in other parts of world by other
incumbent telecom service providers with increased trend of outsourcing of IT service. This
new IDC service has created a new window of opportunity for BSNL from both Data

New Delhi, November 29, 2011 :

Jaipur has become today the first city in the country to have 1000 customers working on
Optical Fiber through state of art Fiber To The Home Technology (FTTH) provided by
BSNL. Apart from Jaipur, FTTH services have also been launched in Ajmer, Alwar, Bikaner,
Jodhpur, Kota, Sawai Madhopur, Sriganganagar and Udaipur cities of Rajasthan. Similar
services have been launched in around 140 cities across the country. Access has already been
provided to more than 5000 connections through IPTV, broadband, ILL and VPN etc. These
services were launched as a Pilot project by Shri Sachin Pilot, MoS for Communications &
IT and Jaipur was the first city to rollout these services in March,2010. FTTH is the latest and
most advanced communication technology and is presently available only in few countries in
the world.
BSNL is providing these triple play services to a wide range of customers starting at a very
nominal monthly rental plan of Rs 580/- (Rs 180/- for voice + Rs 250 for Broadband + Rs
150 for IPTV). Besides this high end broadband plans up to Fiber -100 which gives a speed
of 100Mbps are also available for the customers.

35
This technology is replacement of Copper Networks which cannot handle huge bandwidths
over long distances. The technology also supports many new high bandwidth services such as
Voice, High Speed Internet, IPTV, Video on Demand, High speed Gaming, VPN, Lease
Circuits etc. The technology is based on GPON standards developed by International
Telecommunications Union (ITU) and allows for upstream and downstream bandwidth of 2.5
Gbps. It provides for Triple play services to the customer.
At present, broadband services are being provided through copper network which has
limitation of bandwidth maximum upto 2 mbps over a distance of 4 to 5 KMs. In Market,
there is great demand for higher bandwidth for which Fiber is the solution. Demand for Fiber
is expected to grow at an exponential rate over a span of next 5 to 10 years. Giving
broadband services beyond 2 Mbps and say up to 100 Mbps BSNL has
conceptualized Broadband on Fiber for which FTTH technology penetration in the network is
being taken up by BSNL at a very fast pace.
