WINTER TERM 1998

FINAL EXAM
1. Describe the evolution of modern shipbuilding from the days of the clipper ship. Make sure
you include significant changes along the way.
2. Describe the evolution of offshore drilling rig and platform construction.
3. Using the Ship Type Demand Breakdown Pie-chart divide the market into the following three
market demand categories and show which ships would be in each category by preparing a
matrix for the different ship types:
 Large market share
 Medium market share
 Niche market share
4. Your shipyard has produced 80,000 CGT of ships per year average over the past 3 years.
Production labor level for the same period has averaged 1,750 and they worked an average of
1,800 hours per year. Use the attached curve to determine maximum fully burdoned labor rate
at which you will still be competitive based on cost of labor.
5. Describe the purposes of Contracts and Specifications and also the precedence between
Contract Specifications, Contract Drawings and the Contract.
6. Engineering has prepared the attached weight breakdown for a new ship design. You must
prepare an ROM cost estimate. Use the cost charts from your notes to develop both labor and
material costs. Check both totals calculated from group Cost Estimate Relationships (CER's)
by the Lightship CER's. Also check Production labor total against competitive target of 45
MH/CGT.
7. Describe the major components in a world class shipyard. You can do this by combinations of
text and sketches showing the layout and/or identifying the material flow.
8. Describe the three major concepts of modern shipbuilding practise.
9. Describe how Design for Production can be applied in the early design stage and give four (4)
examples of areas to which it can be applied.
10. Describe the major goals of Group Technology and how they could be applied to shipbuilding.
11. Describe how a number of breakdown structures can be combined to provide a product-
oriented work breakdown structure for a typical shipyard.
12. Descibe the three levels of planning and state which groups should use them.
13. See attached CPM Question.
14. Describe how Production Control utilizes planning and scheduling.
15. Explain the Shipbuilding Policy and Build Strategy approach to shipbuilding.
16. Describe current (a) CAD and (b) CAM applications in shipyards.
17. Describe, with the aid of diagrams, the 5 organization structures and which one you would use
in your shipyard and why.
18. Explain what you think needs to be done in U.S. shipyards for them to successfully enter the
international commercial shipbuilding market.
