It seems that our government is acquiring too much information from their citizens, but they
also acquire it from foreign countries. After the Cold War with Russia, the United States was
forced to find a way of protecting its citizens from foreign influences. The solution was the
National Security system, which is tasked to intercept and interpret communications for the
safety of the nation.
2. This article is very similar to other articles because of the topic of the nation’s security.
Though many people want to be protected, they also want to keep their privacy.
3. The author’s purpose is to inform its audience about the importance and the history of
National Security.
4. The audience is any person that wants to know the benefits of National Security, this creates
a bias towards the audience by not giving the downside or bad aspects of National Security.
5. The most relevant details that the author gives is the Cold War and how National Security
began because of it.
6. Logos is most prevalent in the author’s writing.

“In the United States the NSA was tasked with both protecting American Communications from
interceptions and interpretations AND intercepting and interpreting communications between
foreign governments and their agents”.

“When Al Qaeda launched its war against the United States in 2001 by seizing control of 4
commercial airliners and crashing them into important buildings, citizens of more than 80
nations were killed”.

“To combat these terrorist, the National Security Agency and its counterparts around the world
to find and monitor communications between al Qaeda’s ‘core leadership’ and various regional
‘cells’ ”.

7. A possible theme for this article is that national security is more important than privacy
because it can prevent terrorist attacks by intercepting communications.

“In the United States the NSA wa tasked with both protecting American Communications from

8. This text helped me understand the topic of ‘national security’ by giving me the facts about
how it originated and why it is still needed now.
9. Something that iI would change would be the vagueness of the article. If this change were to
be made then the audience would trust this article more because it's clear.

10. OPTION #2: Although the privacy of the American citizens is very important, the National
Security of the United States is more important because it protects us from terrorist attacks.
With a strong National Security, terrorist attacks would not happen. “When Al Qaeda launched
its war against the United States in 2001 by seizing control of 4 commercial airliners and
crashing them into important buildings, citizens of more than 80 nations were killed”. With the
tragic events that occurred in 9/11, the national security has been trying to amplify its security
methods. The security of the nation can be achieved through violating the privacy of the citizens
but protecting the United States.
