McKinley, Christopher J., and Erin K. Ruppel. "Exploring How Perceived Threat and Self-

efficacy Contribute to College Students’ Use and Perceptions of Online Mental Health

Resources." Shibboleth Authentication Request. N.p., 22 Feb. 2014. Web. 06 Apr. 2018.

This source is relevant to my inquiry because it provides research and results based on a

survey on one of the resources for mental health issues: the internet. This survey also

provided information on the mental states of participants ranging from teens to young

adults. Other information that helped with my inquiry is the availability and usefulness

of online resources as well as the usage by the age group surveyed. The way that this

source helped me move forward with my inquiry was that it introduced new resources

that teens and young adults use for mental health care. This led me to have new research

topics to be searched.

This peer-reviewed article was written by Christopher J. McKinley and Erin K. Ruppel.

McKinley has a BA, MA, and a PhD in communication. He now teaches at Montclair

University and has been there since 2011 while also pursuing research on childhood

obesity and other health-related concerns. Ruppel also has a BA, MA, and PhD in

Communication. She teaches at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and has been

involved in research on communication technologies, health communications, etc. These

two authors are indeed qualified to write on this topic due to their research on teens and

young adults and their communication/mental health concerns.

"Mental Health in America - Access to Care Data." Mental Health America. N.p., 17 Oct. 2016.

Web.

This website is relevant to my inquiry because it shows the lack of mental health care

available in the United States for teens/youth and adults. This is due to the lack of mental

health professionals, insurance coverage for mental health, costs being too high, and

treatment needs being unmet. The information presented in this website that helped with

my inquiry was the collection of statistics on national percentages pertaining to insurance

coverage, mental health victims that actually received help compared to the ones that

didn’t, etc. I can move forward with my inquiry due to the large amount of statistics.

The background information provided was the national surveys taken to gather the

statistics and create the percentages.

There is no specific author given for the page of the website used, although the president

and CEO of Mental Health America is Paul Gionfriddo. Gionfriddo has a BA in

Philosophy and his experience includes being a writer on mental and public health. He is

qualified to be in charge of a non-profit organization because he has been involved with

mental health awareness for over 30 years. The organization itself is trustworthy because

it is non-profit and on the site itself, there is a list of all the financial statements of where

they received money from. There is a list of all the donors/donor companies and the

amount given to MHA.

Sarvet, Barry, Joseph Gold, Jeff Q. Bostic, Bruce J. Masek, Jefferson B. Prince, Mary Jeffers-

Terry, Charles F. Moore, Benjamin Molbert, and John H. Straus. "Improving Access to

Mental Health Care for Children: The Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Project."

Pediatrics 126.6 (2010): 1191. Print.

The main things I learned about this source is that there is a direct connection between

pediatric primary care clinicians (PCCs) and access to child psychiatry resources such as

education on mental health and referral assistance by a PCC. I also learned that when

there is rapid access to mental health care, patients and PCCs both feel more fulfilled

after a consultation. There is an increase in ratings because of this which further supports

the connection between PCCs and access to child mental health care. This article is

relevant to my inquiry because of the background and test of a theory it provides. The

theory being tested is that quicker access to mental health care could improve the mental

health of adolescents. My inquiry is based around providing children and teens with

easier and quicker access to mental health care which could possibly prevent the severe

mental illnesses found in a large portion of the teenage population of the United States.

This article is a credible source due to the widespread organization that published the

article. The publisher is the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) which is an

organization that performs research on adolescents concerning the physical, mental, and

social health ranging from infants to young adults. The organization consists of 66,000
Byerly 4

pediatricians that all contribute to the research and studies/surveys performed by the

AAP. The AAP was founded in 1930 and now has 14 departments and 26 divisions that

all contribute to the overall mission of the organization. The AAP has the largest

publishing program around the globe ranging from internet articles to books/textbooks.

As for funding, the American Academy of Pediatrics is funded through a membership

fee, profits from educational opportunities on pediatric health, and grants/donations from

larger companies or corporations.

Thornicroft, Graham ; Ruggeri, Mirella ; Goldberg, David; Improving Mental Health Care: The

Global Challenge. John Wiley & Sons, 2013.

This source is relevant to my inquiry because it provides information about the mental

health care system itself. It shows the improvements that need to be made before it could

be made more available to adolescents who are in need of better mental health care. It

was helpful to my inquiry due to certain information provided such as ROM data which

is a new method to mental health care that not many have heard of. It could be very

successful if it’s implemented daily which contributes to my inquiry of how to implement

mental health care better into society. I am able to move forward due to new ideas

(specifically methods) being presented/introduced (such as ROM data). The background

information presented within this source is the actual models such as the Australian and

Dutch models that implement ROM data into their systems and are successful with it.

The authors of this book are Graham Thornicroft, Mirella Ruggeri, and David Goldberg.

Thornicroft has an MBBS, MSc, PhD, FRCPsych, and an FMedSci. All of these degrees

are medical degrees as well as psychiatry ones. Ruggeri has an MD and PhD, and is also

a professor in the section of psychiatry at the University of Verona. Goldberg was a

professor at King’s College London in the Institute of Psychiatry. He also has won the

Lifetime Achievement Award 2009 at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. These three are

qualified to write a book such as this due to their extensive experience in the field of

psychiatry.

Waters, Brad. "23 Mental Health Professionals Interviewed About Their Jobs." Psychology

Today. Sussex Publishers, 14 June 2015. Web. 09 Apr. 2018.

This source is relevant to my inquiry because it shows the benefit of mental health care

from the professional’s point of view. Rather than hearing about how people are not

getting treatment, this interview shows the side of the mental health care system that no

one gets to see since they cannot receive treatment in the first place. The information that

was helpful in this interview was based on the questions: “Describe [some] of your job

duties,” and “Describe one thing you find fulfilling about working in the industry.” This

article does allow me to move forward in my inquiry due to the point of view change.

The author of this interview post is Brad Waters. Waters has an MA in social work and

is currently a career coach. His job allows him to work with people who have expressed

some interest in going into the mental health field. This means that he hears the

professional side of the mental health care system more than most.
