Aim:

Determine the reaction rate constant ( k ) of the

reaction between the sodium hydroxide and ethyl
acetate.

Introduction:
The knowledge of reaction rate constant ( k ) is very
important for the chemical process.
The reaction rate constant relates with the
concentration of the solute and the time.
To do this experiment we need to prepare two solutions
of ( NAOH ) and ( ethyl acetate ).

Theory:
Chemical kinetics deals with rates and mechanisms of
chemical reaction without the disguising influence of
energy and mass transfer.
It quantitatively describes the curse of reaction with
time as a function of reaction conditions.
( concentration, pressure, temperature )
Unfortunately , in most cases the status of current
research does not enable us to predict the elementary
steps ( reaction mechanism ) of particular reaction a
priori. Consequently , kinetic analyses almost always
require experiment.

3
Reaction rates must frequently be represented by
means of simplified models which do not exactly
correspond to the chemical processes taking place,
based on the fit between model and experiment the
kinetic should decide whether the simplifications
involved are truly permissible.

Equipment and Materials:

1 – Batch reactor
2 – two beakers
3 – conductivity meter
4 – most of NAOH
5 – ethyl acetate
6 – stop watch

Description:

4
Experiment Procedures:
1 – prepare two solutions of NAOH and ethyl acetate by
the same quantity and concentration ( 0.05 M )
2 – But the solutions in the reactor at the same time and
turn on the stirrer
3 – turn the stop watch
4 – take the records of conductivity meter all 5 minutes
until 45 minutes .

Calculations & Result:

Prepare of NaOH:
W = Mwt*V*M
MWT = 40 g/gmol
V = 0.3 L
M = 0.05
W = 40 * 0.3 * 0.05 = 0.36 g
Prepare of ethyl acetate:
Mwt = 88 g/gmol
V = 0.3
M = 0.05
W = 88 * 0.3 * 0.05 = 1.32 g

RECOMMENDATIONS:
There were few recommendations in order to overcome
the possible errors. Firstly, the
chemical preparation of dilution NaOH and Ethyl
Acetate should be prepared carefully so that
the disrupted results can occur. Secondly, the Batch
must be cleaned before and after the
usage to prevent contaminations. Other than that, the
wires or other equipment involved must
undergo frequent maintenance. Other than that, time
must be sufficient to prevent required
data to not be obtained.
