EDUC 606: Journal Entry 5 Prompt: Use the template below to describe the action plan you intend

to implement in your educational setting as well

as the data collection & analysis methods you intend to use to monitor the impact of your action plan.
Puzzlement Statement:
I am puzzled by Marie’s lack of progress in writing and how her home culture and my writing instruction may be impacting her progress. What can
I do to support her writing progress?

Summarize what you have learned from the literature (with citations) and from your informational data collection:

From analyzing Marie’s data, I can see that she has made progress from the beginning of the year. However, she still struggles to write in complete
sentences without support from the teacher. According to Lin (2015), EL students will demonstrate more basic grammatical, spelling and
vocabulary errors in their writing because they did not acquire those skills in the natural way, as native speakers did. They are trying to learn it as
they learn to speak the language. The author feels that they need direct instruction in these basic skills to improve (Lin, 2015). According to
Parlindungan (2017), EL students also need access to literacy in order for their written language to develop. The literacy that they are exposed to
can come in many different forms, not just traditional forms (Parlindungan, 2017). It can come from books or it can be in a digital form, such as
YouTube, online books or other internet usage (Parlindungan, 2017). Yu & Lee (2016) have found that using peer interactions, such as peer editing,
stems from a sociocultural learning perspective and can be a successful way for students to improve their writing skills through collaboration.

Your action:

-Send home books translated in Spanish for Marie to read with her parents and increase her access to literacy
-Send home comprehension questions translated in Spanish for Marie’s parents to ask her after reading with her
-Use peer editing as a way to increase engagement with peer interaction during writing
-Incorporate writing conferences to help support Marie’s progress with one-on-one support
-Provide one-on-one writing intervention with direct instruction to increase Marie’s ability to improve the basic grammar, spelling and vocabulary
skills necessary for writing

How will the data above help you understand the puzzlement through the lens of your cultural question?

I will be able to see if Marie’s home culture has an influence on her writing abilities and if making changes to my writing instruction and
implementing more access to literacy, especially at home, will increase her writing abilities.
