A very indirect and polite way to be vague about where you are going is using the expression
rayeh meshwaar. Rayeh means "I'm going," and meshwar, which is the important word we
want to learn here, means "something you need to take care of", without saying exactly where
you're going. The listener will understand that you don't want to give more information about
your destination.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

When asking for directions, the smartest thing to do is ask a shop owner, for many reasons.
The first reason is that shop owners are usually standing outside the shops, especially when

the weather is hot, and also because they will most probably know the area. Always
remember to start your question with law samaht to sound polite and grab the listener's
attention, before you ask the question.

To sound more delicate and caring while saying that you don't have something, such as a
tissue, it sounds very natural to answer laa, wallaahi meaning "No, I swear". It implies that you
want to help by giving the requested item, but you can't because you just don't have it.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

In Arabic, the word that translates to "to like" and "to love" is the same; it's the verb yhebb.
How do you know which one they mean then? The only way to know which one is intended is
by context. But usually, if it's followed by a person's name, it probably means that you love
them, so be careful about using it in that context! It might cause misunderstandings.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

Even if you feel overwhelmed by the new culture and all the new people you meet every day
in Egypt, don't isolate yourself from people and stay alone at home. Make an effort to hang out
with your new friends as much as you can, because that is the best way to learn a country's
language and culture and have fun at the same time!

CULTURAL INSIGHT

Talking on the phone in a foreign language can be very intimidating and confusing at first, but
it's okay to tell the person on the other side that you are a foreigner, and ask them to speak
slowly. You could say momken tetkallem berraahah shwayya? meaning "can you speak a bit

slower?" People will gladly do that, and will probably try to add in some English. It's important
to start the conversation in Arabic, however, to give the impression that you are willing to
make the conversation work to get the information that you want.
