Subject: Evaluation of Collegiate Student Exercise Habits

Introduction
In America, one of the biggest health issues the country faces is obesity; research
shows that there’s a significant decline in people’s exercise involvement during the
transition between highschool and college, and it appears that this trend is carrying over
into adulthood. While many gyms and rec centers offer various types of fitness
programs to their clients, not everyone is being impacted by their propaganda. This
research project aims to survey college students who aren’t regularly exercising in order
to find out why they haven’t found a successful gym routine, what factors would
motivate them to get back into the gym, and what types of programs they would find
most helpful in jump starting their new routines. This information can then be used to
create more impactful marketing strategies for gyms (pertaining to specific
demographics on campus), and eventually decrease the rate of obesity nationwide in
the long run.

Completed Work

● Met as a group and set a timeline of work to be done and deadlines

● Survey finished and posted to social media by each group member to begin
collecting data
● Set date for second meeting to cover data analysis and plans for report and
presentation, as well as to ensure data collection was complete
● We decided to focus our research particularly on students at CU Boulder who do
not currently have a consistent exercise routine, and attempt to uncover why. We
utilized other survey variables such as major, gender identity, and intrinsic vs.
extrinsic factors affecting their exercise habits to seek any other correlations.
Work in Progress

● We will be collecting data until Saturday, April 7th, at which point we will end the
survey and compile the data points
● After data collection, we will analyze the data and attempt to draw conclusions
from it based on our original hypothesis
● Based on our analysis we will write our first draft of our report, concluding our
findings. We will then revise and edit until we reach our final report for
submission.
● We will then plan, practice and execute our presentation of our research.

Timeline

4 / 7 - End survey to begin data collection

4 / 12 - Meet to review and analyze data
4 / 17 - First draft of proposal due
4 / 21 - Meet to revise and edit proposal, practice presentation
4 / 24 - Final draft of proposal due

Conclusion
Research activities are going according to schedule and we plan to complete all data
gathering and analysis by the dates outlined in the Timeline. We are in the data collection
process as of now, once the data has been finalized it will be reviewed and analyzed for
exercise trends among student of diverse backgrounds. The analysis should identify potential
marketing and motivational exercise factors and how they are geared towards different
individuals.
