A Peek at next Week…
Math: We are going to begin the last topic of math next week. It will continue to focus on
geometry. The students are going to have a vocabulary quiz along with word problems
that will assess their understanding. Students need to have a full command of the
vocabulary within the geometry unit to truly be successful. The students will have sleeve
protectors with Unit 16 vocabulary clipped in their binder to study nightly.
These are the objectives in Topic 16 that will be taught this week:
-draw and identify perpendicular, parallel, intersecting, or perpendicular
-classify quadrilaterals by lines and angles
-classify triangles by line segments and angles
-recognize and draw lines of symmetry
-identify figures that have line symmetry
-draw figures that have line symmetry
Reading: We will be doing our poetry recitations on Monday. Please check in with your
child about this special activity. It’s a way to celebrate our interpretive thinking about
poetry! We will end the unit with a mini assessment Tuesday where students will interpret
a poem, looking at theme, mood and figurative language. Also, they will be able to use lines
from the poem to support their ideas.
Later in the week, we will begin our test preparation unit. Students will be doing reading
“marathon” sessions to help build stamina.
Writing: We will conclude our opinion writing unit. Students have been working hard to
share their ideas! They will reflect on their writing and show demonstration of grade level
expectations:
• Strong lead
• Thesis statement
• Strong reasoning
• Elaboration
• Transition phrases
• Strong closing
Social Studies: This week students will learn about the different ways that people can
manage their money including saving, spending, borrowing and giving to charity. We will
be using online and interactive curriculum to help students understand the main
concepts. Students will be able to understand financial concepts, recognize the impact of
financial decisions, and apply critical thinking skills to real-world financial situations and
interactive exercises.
Science: Students will conclude their study of animal adaptations by creating their own
creature. Students will complete this assignment in class, and the grade will be taken as
a formal assessment. Students will plan out their animal, explain the traits of the
creature and the benefits of the traits, then draw out the creature and its
environment. We can’t wait to see what they create!
