b) When the researcher returns to their office with their data on their laptop, what is the 1
first thing they must do?

a) Is this data scientific? Briefly explain your answer. 2

b) Sketch a scatter plot of the results. You should plot ‘weight’ on the horizontal axis and 5
‘height’ on the vertical axis. You should give your scatter plot an appropriate title and
label both the horizontal axis and vertical axis.

c) Would it be correct to conclude that the taller an adult the greater their weight? Briefly 2
explain your answer.

d) You have been asked to use the data to estimate the weight of an adult who is 180cm 1
tall. What is the name of this type of estimate?

The marks obtained in an exam by 100 College A students were recorded. The mean mark
was 70 and the standard error was 10.

The marks obtained in the same exam by 150 college B students were also recorded. The
mean mark was 68 and the standard error was 7.

a) Is there more variation in the marks of the College A students or in the marks of the 2
College B students? Briefly explain why.

b) Approximately what percentage of the marks obtained by the College A students lie in 1
the range 60 to 80?

c) State the range of marks of the College B students that would give a 95% confidence 1
interval.

d) What is the spread of the marks of the College A students? 2

e) A sample of the marks from seven College A students is selected at random and are
as follows:
35 73 83 87 64 69 79

i) Calculate the mean of the sample. 2


ii) Find the median of the sample. 2

Question 4

The management team of a chain of 30 sportswear shops is deciding whether to buy out a
smaller chain of 5 sportswear shops as part of its expansion plans. The management team
have decided to apply the Six Hats method to the problem. The hats will be used ‘in parallel’.

a) Outline an alternative way that the Six Hats method could be applied to the problem. 2

b) Briefly describe the role of the black hat and suggest how the wearer might respond 3
to the idea of buying out the chain of 5 sportswear shops.

c) Is the wearer of the black hat involved in predominantly right-brained or left-brained 1


activity?

d) Imagine you have been asked to be either the chair or facilitator at the meeting.

v) What colour hat would you wear? 1


vi) Explain the role of this colour hat. 3
