Industrial Training report on RAWALPORA GRID-SUBSTATION

1.INTRODUCTION

Grid Sub-Station RAWALPORA is situated at a distance of about 5 kms

from SRINAGAR via SANANTNAGAR road. The Grid Sub-Station is fed
by 132KV double circuit Pampore and 132KV double circuit Bemina.
The Grid Station has five power transformers besides that it has six
commissioned 33KV outgoing feeders namely RAWALPORA, BAGHI
MEHTAB, AIRFORCE, RANGRETH, CHANAPORA, and SILK
FACTORY, . In addition to above mentioned feeders it has three
33KV/1250A spare feeder spare 1 spare 2 spare 3, one bus coupler bay,
250kv one auxiliary bay and one shunt capacitor bay. There has been
adopted four isolator scheme on input (132 k.v) side and two isolator

scheme on output (33 k.v) side.

2.132 KV SIDE

Figure 1 : 132 K.V incoming lines

It has two double circuit arrangement of incoming lines comprising of four
132 K.V incoming lines. Each incoming lines capable of supplying the rated
sub-station load. Such an arrangement increases the reliability of the system.
In case there is break down of one incoming line the other line maintains
supply continuity. It has duplicate bus bar system, one main bus bar and
spare bus bar. Both bus bars are connected by bus coupler. Each incoming
line is connected to bus bar through one LA, one CT, one circuit breaker,
one PT and isolator. The LA’s are also

connected near the transformer terminals in order to protect them from

lightning strokes.

3.POWER TRANSFORMER
Power transformer is used to step down the voltage from 132 KV to
33KV. Power transformers are installed on concrete slabs.

It have 5no, (BHEL MADE) Power Transformers,

Rated volt. 132/33KV,
Provided with O/C fault protection, E/F protection, Restricted earth fault protection ,
Differential protection, buccholz relay protection and oil and temperature protection.
Rated power(MVA)

Transformer 1 20MVA
Transformer 2 50MVA
Transformer 3 20MVA

4.33 KV SIDE

On 33 kv side it has 2 buses; MAIN BUS, and RESERVE BUS.

Third bus is connected in case there is a damage to main bus or spare bus,
which is connected through isolators to main bus and spare bus.

It has 6 feeder, 1 auxiliary,3 spare feeder , 1 coupler transformer. Each bay

is provided with one set of (ABB MAKE) vacuum circuit breaker (except
auxiliary bay), CT’S, isolators and LA’S .The Power transformer
bays are connected to buses (pipe conductors) supported on GI columns by
discs with proper fittings. Besides that it has (ABB MAKE) PT’S
installed in main and reserve buses.

5.33KV FEEDER BAYS

It has six commissioned feeders, one auxillary feeder and three spare
feeder. The feeder wise detail is as under:

1.33KV SILK FACTORY FEEDER

This feeder feeds only Silk factory Rajbagh (33/11 KV). Protection
adopted for 33kv feeders are Overcurrent protection and Earth Fault
protection.

2. 33KV AIRFORCE FEEDER

This feeder feeds old Airport Rangreth (33/11 KV). Protection adopted for
33kv feeders are Overcurrent protection and Earth Fault protection .

3. 33KV RAWALPORA FEEDER

This feeder feeds the local and adjoining area of Rawalpora (33/11 KV).

4. 33KV CHANAPORA FEEDER

This feeder is used to feed the Chanapora area (33/11 KV).

5. 33KV BAGHI MEHTAB FEEDER

This feeder is used to feed the Baghi Mehtab area (33/11 KV).

6. 33KV RANGRETH FEEDER

This feeder is used to feed the industrial area of Rangreth (33/11 KV).

6.CONTROL ROOM

Grid control Room is the main controlling and monitoring center.

Control room houses the Control & Relay Panels by which we can
Monitor all system parameters like as bus voltage, Bus current, Import &
Dispatch of Energy, fault details etc. and can control incoming and
outgoing supply to Grid station through Remote operation. The
equipments inside control room are:

a. 132KV panels.
b. 33KV panels.
c. Battery charger.
d. Battery bank.
e. DC distribution board.
f. AC distribution board.
g. Power factor panel.

7.MAIN EQUIPMENTS

7.1 Isolating switches:

These are used to disconnect a part of system which is under
maintenance and repairs. Isolators are operated only when the lines in
which they are connected carry no current.

7.2 Circuit breaker:

It opens or closes a circuit under normal as well as faulty
conditions. It can be operated manually under normal conditions and
automatically under faulty conditions. On 132 KV side it has SF6 circuit
breakers and on 33KV side it has vacuum circuit breakers.

7.3 Metering and indicating instruments

Various metering and indicating instruments installed in Rawalpora sub-
station are:

Ammeters
Voltmeters
Energy meters
Power factor meters etc.

7.6 Relay:
It is a protective device that detects the fault and initiates the
operation of circuit breaker to isolate the defective element from rest of the
system.

7.8 Bus bars:

Bus bars are used to connect electrically number of lines operating at
same voltage. Incoming and outgoing lines in receiving station are
connected to the bus bar. Commonly used bus bar arrangements are:

Single bus bar arrangement

Single bus bar arrangement with sectionalisation
Double bus bar arrangement

In this receiving station double bus bar arrangement is utilised .

7.9 Battery bank:

Battery banks are used for functioning of automatic circuits,

relays and essential lights of station under circumstances when
there is no supply from input side.

Batteries are kept in battery room where they are

given D.C supply for charging using chargers. Mostly used
batteries are:

Lead acid battery

Alkaline battery

Here lead acid batteries are used.

8.CAPACITOR BANK
It is used for power factor improvement. The equipment used here for this
purpose are static capacitors. Power factor improvement is required because
most power loads are inductive taking lagging current.

The capacitor draws a leading current and partly or completely

neutralises the lagging reactive component of load current. Thus it
improves power factor.
