Working With Prime and Composite Numbers

Grade: Seventh Grade

Group members: Cris Woolace, Kendall Green, and Berenice Iniguez
Overall Goal: By the end of the two day lesson, students will be able to differentiate between
prime and composite numbers. This lesson will be taught by breaking things down into its
simplest form. Students will be taught in steps the differences between prime factorization,
distributing exponents, and squaring.

Key Terms & Definitions:
● Computational Thinking: The thought processes involved in coming up with problems and
solutions.
● Decomposition: Breaking problems down as much as possible in order to see the
different parts of them.
● Abstraction: Finding the bare minimum of information needed to solve the problem.
● Patterns: Pattern recognition helps to recognize patterns in the problems being solved.
● Algorithms: A set or rules to follow when doing calculations or problem-solving.
● Integer: A whole number
● Prime Number: A whole number whose only factors are one and itself.
● Composite Number: A whole number with more factors than one and itself.
● Exponents: A number by the top right corner that indicates how many times the number is
multiplied by itself.
● Prime Factorization: Breaking down a composite number to its prime factors.
● Square Root: A number that produces a specified quantity when multiplied by itself
● Perfect Square: The product to any number multiplied by itself.

Lesson Introduction (EdPuzzle):

Day 1: The students will know these concepts, because it is the end of the year. As a review, an
EdPuzzle will be created and shown to the students. The EdPuzzle
(https://edpuzzle.com/media/5ab6c3798890df416d78c4f9) will show the following video :
https://youtu.be/tW97UU01ShY . This video explains prime numbers, composite numbers, and
prime factorization. It demonstrates how to break down whole numbers into prime or composite
numbers in factor trees and writing the final answer of its prime factors using exponents. There
are seven questions throughout the video to help the students review the concepts and show
their understanding. The video is 7 minutes, but students will be given 3 minutes to answer the 7
questions throughout the video where it will be paused. This EdPuzzle will take about 30 minutes
to introduce the lesson for the day.

Lesson Main:

Day 1 (cont.): For the last twenty minutes of class, students will do a practice worksheet
(https://docs.google.com/document/d/1M-QsNDpyZ8psF7j0cqv0ddx5rEBxmOvAt-DNw90d_Ys/e
dit?usp=sharing). Students have the opportunity to ask the teacher questions for clarification of
the new material.

Day 2: Students will expand on what was taught yesterday. Students will do two warm-up
problems for the first five minutes of class. This will review what was taught in class from Day 1.
Students will then be taught new material. The new material will be based on perfect squares and
square roots. The class will discuss what numbers
Towards the end of class the students will play a Kahoot.

There will be twenty questions. The Kahoot will take ten to fifteen minutes and will end at the
same time class finishes.

Lesson Ending ( Review Game): Day 3: The lesson will end with both standards being reviewed.
There will be a ten minute discussion to readdress what was taught. If students already
understand the material, then the discussion can be shorter. After the discussion the class will
play “Popcorn Review,” as a review game. There will be a popcorn bucket with folded yellow and
white pieces of “popcorn” (paper) in it. The students will play the game by picking a piece of
paper from the bucket, unfolding it, and answering the the question on the paper. The papers will
have different numbers of which they will find the square root of, square the number, find the
prime factors, or state if the number is prime or composite. This game will serve as a review of
the lesson’s two standards and show the students understanding of the concepts with their
answers. It will also be a fun way to end the lesson.

Differentiation:

Differentiation for ability levels
● High Ability Learners: “Challenge” worksheet with harder problems for students.
● Low Ability Learners: Be available to students during work time. Have worksheets with
step-by-step instructions for extra help. If student is struggling with differentiating
between the terms and definitions, have a print-off of the terms listed.
Differentiation for demographics
● Gender, race, culture, and/or sexual identity
○ Not applicable to subject
Differentiation for languages
● ESL
○ Students are using technology, so this will allow the students to change to their
first language if they would like. Students can also use their second language, if
they are comfortable.
● EFL
○ Students will be able to read all given material.
● ENL
○ Students are using technology, so technology will allow the students to change to
their first language if they would like.
Differentiation for access & resources
● Computers, Internet connection, and/or Wifi access
○ If technology isn’t being used, then the teacher can write questions on the board
and solve with the class.

Anticipated Difficulties:

Students might not have access to technology. Technology is sometimes unreliable. If this
occurs, then the teacher will have a list of items to cover and teach to the students. The teacher
will write questions on the board and will solve them with the class. The teacher will allow
students to answer questions.
