Lesson  Idea  Name:      Sorting  Animals  Around  the  World
Content  Area:    Science
Grade  Level(s):      5th
Content  Standard  Addressed:
S5L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to group organisms using scientific
classification procedures. a. Develop a model that illustrates how animals are sorted into groups
(vertebrate and invertebrate) and how vertebrates are sorted into groups (fish, amphibian, reptile, bird,
and mammal) using data from multiple sources.

Technology  Standard  Addressed:
3:  Knowledge  Constructor

Selected  Online  Project/Collaboration  Site/Publishing  Opportunity:      iEARN

URL(s)  to  support  the  lesson:      https://iearn.org/

Describe  how  you  would  incorporate  an  Online  Project/Collaboration  Site/Publishing  Opportunity  in  your
classroom:
In  this  lesson  I  would  use  iEARN  in  my  classroom.  This  is  a  collaboration  site  in  which  students  can  share  their
findings  and  educational  ideas  with  students  all  over  the  world.  This  gives  students  an  opportunity  to
incorporate  different  cultures  into  the  classroom  learning.  This  also  promotes  technology  use  in  the
classroom  which  can  often  times  motivate  student’s  participation  in  a  lesson.
In  this  lesson  students  will  work  on  learning  science  with  another  student  somewhere  in  the  world.  The
students  will  be  working  on  the  same  standard  and  will  be  classifying  the  different  animals  they  see  in  their
world.  This  will  allow  both  students  to  be  engaged  in  the  lesson  because  they  need  to  classify  animals  from
two  different  parts  of  the  world.  The  students  will  share  their  knowledge  of  the  animal  and  the  students  will
then  work  together  to  classify  all  the  animals  that  both  the  students  bring  to  the  table.

What  technologies  would  be  required  to  implement  this  proposed  learning  activity  in  a  classroom?
Students  would  all  need  their  own  technology  device  (laptop,  tablet,  desktop,  etc.)  and  headphones  with  a
microphone.

Describe  how  the  following  features  are  addressed  in  this  learning  experience  (note:  all  of  them  may  not  be
addressed  in  the  project,  but  most  should  be  if  you  are  reaching  a  high  LoTi  Level).
a. Collaboration  with  peers,  near-‐peers,  mentors  outside  their  classroom  and  often  beyond  their
school:    The  students  will  be  interacting  with  another  peer  outside  the  classroom  through  iEARN.  This
tool  allows  them  to  communicate  with  a  peer  and  work  through  an  academic  task  together.

b. Student-‐centered  learning  and  knowledge  creation  (creating  original  data  and  or  producing  original
products  as  a  result  of  engaging  in  a  project):    Students  are  finding  animals  in  their  country  that  they
can  classify.  The  students  are  learning  about  how  to  classify  these  animals  by  researching  the  animals
and  listening  to  their  peer  online  describe  the  animal  to  try  to  classify  the  animal.

c. Higher-‐order  thinking:    not  addressed

d. Students  publishing  their  original  work  to  others  who  will  use/care  about  their  product:    not
addressed

Universal  Design  for  Learning  (UDL):    For  UDL  the  students  are  fostering  collaboration  and  communication.
During  this  activity  the  students  will  be  working  with  another  student  online  to  collaborate  and  communicate.
Throughout  this  activity  the  students  will  classify  animals  that  they  have  come  into  contact  with.  In  order  to
share  these  animal’s  traits,  the  students  must  collaborate.

Lesson  idea  implementation  and  Internet  Safety  Policies:  As  the  teacher  it  is  important  to  research  the
classroom  that  yours  will  be  connecting  with  before  you  allow  your  students  to  connect  with  this  classroom.
The  students  should  also  have  all  taken  a  class  and  they  should  all  understand  the  importance  of  internet
safety  and  how  to  safely  navigate  the  web  and  use  web  etiquette.  Make  sure  as  the  teacher  you  set  up
guidelines  for  the  lesson  before  and  research  the  site  your  students  will  be  on  for  validity.

Reflective  Practice:  I  think  this  activity  can  have  a  huge  impact  on  student  learning  because  it  will  allow  for
the  students  to  be  engaged  because  they  will  be  using  technology.  This  engagement  will  encourage  student
participation  and  the  students  will  walk  away  from  the  lesson  knowing  more  about  a  cultural  than  their  own.
To  further  extend  this  lesson  I  could  have  the  students  work  together  to  create  a  finalized  project  in  which
they  can  publish.  This  can  be  any  form  of  diagram  that  explains  their  classifications  of  the  animals  they  both
picked.  This  publication  will  increase  the  LoTi  level.  There  is  already  a  high  technology  integration  in  this
lesson  so  I  don’t  think  there  is  any  more  technology  that  could  be  incorporated  into  this  lesson.  Every  student
will  already  have  1  to  1  technology  within  the  classroom.
