Education Field Experience Observation

I. Observation #1:

a. Setting

II. Grade Level and Subject Area:

a. 6th Grade

III. Setting:

a. 2 Educator

b. 1 Observer (me)

c. 4 Female Students

d. 10 Male Students

IV. Pre-Observation:

a. The stereotypical public-school classroom has the teacher’s desk either in front or

behind the student’s desks. The student’s desks are in rows all facing front toward

a board of some sorts.

V. Data:
a.

b. When the students enter the classroom, they come in slowly and head across the

room to get breakfast. Then they sit down in assigned seats. When a student needs

a pencil sharpened or paper they are located against the wall by one of the

teacher’s desks. The two desks, one for each teacher, are placed on the same wall.

One is at one end and the other at the opposite end. The noise level is high before

instruction and during games.

VI. Analysis:

a. Students come in and must cross the room for breakfast since breakfast is set up

on the table opposite of the door.

b. Materials are behind the teacher’s desk (the left one) on the window sill. Students

access them whenever needed.

c. The locations of the two teacher’s desks make every student easily visible and

close. All student’s desks are facing the smart board and all students can see it

clearly.

d. The students get loud in between subjects and before school. They are very

talkative.

VII. Recommendations:

a. The location of breakfast in the morning is questionable. The breakfast could be

moved to two empty desks closer to the door. This would stop students from

crossing the room before sitting down. It would also clear up the space between

the teachers and it would be easier for students to talk to the teachers one on one

in the morning.

b.

VIII. Post Observation:

a. Even though this classroom is a public-school classroom, it does not fit what I

picture in my head. I picture more of a middle school classroom. This set up

seems to work well with this class since the teachers, when sitting at their desks,

are still close to the students. From personal experience I remember teachers

being far away and distant when they were at their desk. It was almost like the

teacher was in their own world.
