8.Outline of the proposed Research
Programme for thesis :
(a) Title of the thesis
Evaluation of triple cross progenies of CSML×Hansli×CSFL for broiler traits.

(b) Objective of the study:


Development of a chicken crossbred verity that would be adaptable to the local climatic
conditions and be suitable for backyard as well as commercial rearing. Crossbreeding has been
a major tool for the development of such chicken crossbred verity to meet the growing demands
of the human population and to improve the per capita consumption among the rural people. The
objectives of the present study has is to evaluate the performance of triple cross chicken
developed by using a native breed and two broiler lines for broiler traits and also compare with
commercial broilers.

1. Growth performance: From the weekly body weight gain and feed consumption, weekly
feed conversion ratio and feed efficiency is to be calculated.

2. Feed conversion efficiency: It will be calculated from the weekly recorded data of body
weight gain and feed consumption.
3. Mortality at different ages: Daily mortality is to be recorded in each replica, and thereby
finding out the mortality rate at different ages.
4. Linear body measurement at 6 and 8 weeks of age: The body measurements such as
Shank length, Shank circumference, shank width, Thigh length, keel length, body girth,
height of the bird, back length, neck length, skull length, skull width, beak length, comb
length, wing length, folded wing length, wing span, breast angle are to be measured in
the specified age of the birds.
5. Carcass traits: Carcass traits such as dressed weight, eviscerated weight, giblet weight,
neck weight, wing weight, back weight, breast weight, thigh weight, drumstick weight
etc. to be calculated.
6. Proximate analysis of meat : Moisture, CP,CF, Total Lipids, Nitrogen extract, Total
Ash, Acid insoluble ash are to be calculated
7. Hematological Parameters: Blood parameters such as Hemoglobin %, TEC, PCV,
MCV, MCH, MCHC, Blood glucose, Serum total protein, Albumin, Triglyceride,
Cholesterol, Urea, Uric acid are to be estimated.

8. The serum biochemical parameters under normal and heat stress condition.

(c) Brief review of literature on the subject of study:


Crossbreeding has been a major tool for the development of present-day commercial
breeds of chickens (Sheridan 1981) Crossbred poultry have higher feed efficiency and lower
mortality as compared to purebreds and these two factors play a very important role in
increasing profits in poultry production (Dwivedi et al., 1986).A study was conducted to
investigate the influence of genotype on carcass characteristics and meat chemical
composition traits of one native (Hansli), one improved (CSML - coloured synthetic male
line) and their cross (Hansli×CSML) chickens. The dressing % of Hansli (78.66) and
Hansli×CSML (75.94) was comparable to each other whereas that of CSML (86.9) was
significantly higher (P=0.029) than that of Hansli and Hansli×CSML. The drumstick, thigh,
breast and neck percentages were similar among birds of all genotypes. The drumstick %
ranged from 14.20-17.58 % and the thigh % ranged from 15.11-16.64 % of the dressed
weight. The breast % varied from 22.93-25.63% whereas neck % varied from 5.68-6.19 %
of the dressed weight. Highest wing % was observed in Hansli (15.93) followed by
Hansli×CSML (14.34) and CSML (12.41). The back % was higher (P=0.002) in native Hansli
(21.06) than that of CSML (18.57) and Hansli×CSML (18.66). Highest crude protein content
was observed in thigh meat of Hansli (76.35%) followed by Hansli×CSML (70.78%) and
CSML (54.03%) chickens. A reverse trend was observed for crude fat content. Highest
crude fat content in thigh meat was observed in CSML (40.29%) followed by Hansli×CSML
(21.16%) and Hansli(13.62%). The crude protein content was highest in breast meat of
Hansli (86.92%) followed by Hansli×CSML (86.30%) and CSML (82.32%). However, the
crude fat content was highest in breast meat of CSML (7.67%) followed by Hansli×CSML
(4.47%) and Hansli (2.52%). There was high content of crude protein and low content of
crude fat in breast meat than that of thigh meat. The native Hansli and Hansli×CSML
chickens have an advantage over CSML broilers

A study was conducted to compare the carcass characteristics and meat composition of a
triple cross progeny involving (Hansli × CSML) ♂and CSFL ♀ chicken, taken as the
treatment group, with that of a cross of colored synthetic broiler parent lines (CSML ♂ ×
CSFL ♀) chicken, taken as the control group, raised under intensive management system.
Six healthy birds of 8 weeks of age from each group were sacrificed for this purpose. The
pre-slaughtered live weight, eviscerated weight and dressed weight were 1256.67±110.67g,
826.33±74.54g and 905.00±78.54g in the treatment group whereas the corresponding
weights were 1531.33±177.39g, 972.33±141.99g and 1063.00±152.51g in the control group.
The dressing percentage was 72.03% in treatment group and 69.01% in control group.
There was no significant difference between the groups among cut-up part yields such as
neck, wing, back, breast, thigh and drumstick. The yields of edible offals such as heart, liver,
gizzard were also similar between the groups. The yields of lymphoid organs such as spleen
and bursa of fabricius were also found to be similar between the groups. There was no
significant (p≥0.05) difference in chemical composition of breast and thigh muscles between
the groups. However, the protein% in the treatment group was numerically higher and the
fat% was lower than that of the control group.
Location of Research work:
The Research work will be conducted in the poultry farm of AICRP on Poultry Breeding,
College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, OUAT, Bhubaneswar.

The following parameters will be studied;


 Growth Performance (body weight gain, feed intake) up to 8th week of age
 Feed conversion efficiency
 Mortality
 Linear body measurement (body length, breast angle, shank length, shank width,
shank circumference, body height, keel length, leg length, girth) at 6 th and
8thweeks of age
 Carcass characteristics (live weight, dressing yield, eviscerated yield, giblet, neck,
wing yield, back, breast, thigh, drumstick yield) at8h week of age
 Meat traits (proximate analysis of thigh and breast meat) at 8th week of age
 The serum biochemical parameters under normal and heat stress condition.
