TECHNOLOGY 2

By Ivan Foy
Size and dow nload time is a huge effect on the limitation of a multimedia product and how fast it can be made, most of the de sign files alone are a few GB's, making the time
for downloading the content longer and if the client doesn't hav e that great internet connection then there could be problems in downloading the content, so a way that me
and my work colleagues send work ov er to a client is put ev erything they need into one ZI P folder and send it them that way since the file size is smaller and quicker to
dow nload the w ork gets to the client faster w ith no issue of hav ing to w ait for a long dow nload because of the file size begin huge, so once the ZI P folder dow nloaded all that
the client has to do is click on the ZI P folder then it should act as if it’s a jack in a box with the original file within expanding it its original file size and allowing the client to v iew
the content easily, howev er depend on their file space and RAM to make sure the file will open up on their pc could be an iss ue epically if the file is a few GB's in size.
Things like disk space does strongly affect the way that the file is sent off and receiv ed between agencies and clients normally companies hav e a serv er to go off to make
working as a team easier and faster with a set amount of storage of about 50 – 100 TB's which is a lot of file space so for most companies this isn't a huge issue between file
transfers.
As a designer myself I would strongly suggest hav ing an enteral hard driv e or a USB driv e so that work that you hav e worked on can be put onto the driv e and allow the
RAM/ROM w ithin the computer to hav e more space for the memory allow ing the CPU to run faster meaning that the dow nload time is low ered but it still depends on the
internet download speed, in other words MS (milliseconds) or otherwise known as ping can determine the limitations of download so the higher number of MS the longer the
download time will be at my work my MS is around 19 which isn't bad for Manchester, as for my college its around 40ms meaning that the download time is slower at college
than it is at my w ork.
Adv antages:
Websites are used for multimedia to draw in the customer and I feel that it works well with websites allowing the customer to gather a deep understanding of w hat the
companies intentions are tow ards their product that there are selling and I feel that is perfectly sold to the customer through E-learning.

Disadv antages:
Unfortunately multimedia is slow ly going out of fashion or has been out of fashion for a few years now since the dev elopment of websites has be required by clients to use less of
a wide range of assets and more of a simplistic approach towards websites making a lower range that are E-learning based.

STREAMING METHODS: PROGRESSIVE

DOWNLOADING
So far what I can make out is that there are three different types of streaming methods which are HTTP, RTSP and RTMP these three will allow me to understand what I need to
cov er and look at in order for me to be able to stream the v ideo on the internet and TV so to break down what these are I will now take about them separately.
HTTP:
Adaptiv e HTTP Streaming is a new style of streaming format. What it does is it attempts to join the merits of RTMP/RTSP Streaming efficiency, quality sw itching w ith some of the
Progressiv e Download and is used by companies such as YouTube. Adaptiv e HTTP Streaming works by storing users v ideos on the s erv er in small fragments normally a few
seconds each. The player then glues these fragments together into a continuous stream allowing it to be adaptiv e in the way that the content is shown so adjusting the
quality of the v ideo can happen.
Adaptiv e HTTP Streaming is supported by both Flash and the iPad/iPhone. Android supports it as w ell for its v ersion 3 and support in HTML5 is currently under dev elopment.
Although Adaptiv e HTTP Streaming eliminates many of the downsides of RTMP/RTSP Streaming and Progressiv e Download it still has issues of its own, the biggest being the lack
of standardization. Because it is a new technology there is no single w idely used implementation. The most popular is currently Apple’s HLS, w hich is supported by the
iPad/iPhone and Android 3.0, howev er both Adobe and Microsoft hav e competing offerings and the MPEG consortium is working on a standard named DASH.

STREAMING METHODS: STREAMING

In Photoshop the graphics resolution can sometimes look a little jagged since raster images are made up of individual coloured squares (pixels) and will lose quality if scaled.

For Illustrator its use of mathematical constructs to create vector graphics. So a line is composed of two dots connected by a computer algorithm and instead of just a line of pixels. A vector
image will always never lose quality even if its huge or if you srink it down to the size of your finger.

Now after just briefly going over some of the programs using different types of images, I will be moving into how different file formats change the way quality works, for a start lets talk about
compression… W hen compressing pixels for exporting a file the quality is condensed so that when the user opens the file again i t increase the quality of the image from its compressed state,
but what does this have to do with image resolution? As its compressed the size and quality is compressed most likely the ima ge resolution will be compressed so that the file size is rapidly
reduced and then is sprigged back up when the file is opened (btw BMP and TIF files cannot be compressed).

Sorry went off topic there, moving back to file types so for an example I will use a JPG since it’s a raster based file it works on pixel based sizes, so imagine we are exporting a image out of
photoshop and asks the user what file would you like to export it as and select a JPG just after it will ask the user what re solution they would like to have it as normally this is shown as a slider and
for the user to adjust when exporting their work however in the beginning of creating a new file in Photoshop it will ask the user what resolution you would like to use and you would enter what
resolution you would like as shown on the image.

Now with the original file resolution this plays a big part for when exporting the file for it will increase the quality that is already is.

So for example say the image was of a pink ball that is 128x128 pixels when you created it with a resolution of 64 pixels, you will be able to see lighter/darker pixels around the edges this is due
to bad image quality and can effect the images size, then suddenly the user decides to lower the image size down to 64x64 pixels the resolution of that circle is greatly reduced by half and is
smaller but when zoomed in the pixels are pushed together meaning that pixels will overlap creating colours from two differen t pixels to cover the colours that were once there.

Advantages:

Having a high resolution screen allows users to play videos or video games on a high quality screen as long as the graphics c ards can withstand the sizing of the screen.

Disadvantages:

Having a low resolution on a high resolution screen is horrible for users since it looks very pixelated and blurry with the i ssue of it being so pixelated.

DATA TRANSFER RATE FILE SIZE:

RESOLUTION
Frame rate is the frequency at which consecutive images called frames appear on a display. The term applies equally to film and video cameras, computer graphics, and motion
capture systems. Frame rate may also be called the frame frequency, and be expressed in hertz.

The temporal sensitivity and resolution of human vision varies depending on the type and characteristics of visual stimulus, and it differs between individuals. The human visual system can
process 1 to 5 images per second and perceive them individually, while higher rates are perceived as motion. Modulated light (such as a computer display) is perceived as stable by the
majority of participants in studies when the rate is higher than 50 Hz through 90 Hz. This perception of modulated light as steady is known as the flicker fusion threshold. However, when the
modulated light is non-uniform and contains an image, the flicker fusion threshold can be much higher, in the hundreds of hertz. W ith regard to image recognition, people have been
found to recognize a specific image in an unbroken series of different images, each of which lasts as little as 13 millisecon ds.

Persistence of vision sometimes accounts for very short single-millisecond visual stimulus having a perceived duration of between 100 ms and 400 ms. Multiple stimuli that are very short are
sometimes perceived as a single stimulus, such as a 10 ms green flash of light immediately followed by a 10 ms red flash of light perceived as a single yellow flash of light.

So for example if you're playing a video game and your fps is at a rate of 30 fps then it shows the user that the computer can't handle the game that is playing and that upgrading the hard
drive and graphic would help with this problem but there other ways of adjusting the computer to help with fps such as turnin g the graphics quality down so that there isn't as much to
render and adjust for the player.

Advantages:
Framerate is good indicator if you need an upgrade or not since the way a user uses a computer highly depends on how the fps is since if its now like 10fps then a user can seem very lost in
what the computer is doing and would seem very slow.

Disadvantages:

Can become huge disadvantage if playing online competitive video games since most player have to correct equipment to play the game at their own peak.

Sound settings can be used for sound effect like clicking on a button and uses a clicking sound effect to tell the user that
they hav e just clicked on a button, another thing like this is sw iping hav ing a sw iping sound effect is popular on mobile
dev ices and is used on a v ast range of mobile w ebsites these are used to alert the user of their actions on what they are
doing this can be good or bad such as something like sticky keys if you press shift more than 5 times it w ill giv e you a pop up
message w ith a loud sound effect of a bleep that tells the user that the effect of press shift more than 5 times can result in
damaging your keyboard, this is one of the examples w hy media based products use sound effects effectiv ely to w arn or
tell the user of their actions.
Another part of sound in multimedia is background sound this can be a song that just links into the product that is being
show n on the screen allow ing the user to be more connected w ith the product being sold to them and with this sort of style
business hav e managed to create media based product that are related to w hat they are sell such as a holiday at the sea
side w ould hav e smooth w av es rolling into the sand w ith Seagal's chirpings away and maybe a whistle of wind coming
from the ocean.
How ev er this can be an irritation to some users so hav ing a mute button is strongly suggested to be used w hen dev eloping
a media based product since that w ould allow the user to mute the sound and continue looking at the content that is
being show n to the user.
Adv antages:
Can be linked closely to the product being sold and w ith music it can often be an exciting w ay of show ing off a product as
show n in v ideo game trailers and custom music built around the product.
Disadv antages:
So users find music an irritation w hen read or using content so hav ing some sort of sound option or mute option w ould a
good idea w hen dev eloping media based products.

Overall these streaming methods has allowed me to see that the way I can use these in my upcoming project has been shown across a wide range
of users computers is different and unique with each one allowing things like fps, download speeds and file sizes to be different, this said I feel that
learning about this information now is key since when I will be developing the upcoming project, I will need a deep understanding of how to
develop my upcoming project to use these streaming methods to help me out in the development allowing me to draw in a bigger range of
customers for my clients, however I must keep in mind the different streaming methods, like resolution and what sort of streaming method I should
use to transfer it show off my work to the client and allowing me to gain some reputation between companies and hopefully lead t o a few
partnerships.

Reefing back to what I said on streaming methods I feel that I should look into more about these since I don't normally use t hem for my work but I
always use streaming methods for my video games so I will have to see what adobe has on their own software since I could think of a few
different ideas that could allow me to do my work faster and easier, so I will have to see what there is instore for me to use for my work and
hopefully I will be able to use these for my job and college work so that I get more free time to work on other project and play some video games.
