Directions: Closely read the following poem and respond to the discussion questions with a
group. While reading the poem, make note of any questions you may have or lines that spark
interest. In addition, record any literary elements Angelou uses to enhance her poem. (i.e
alliteration, metaphor, simile, repetition, etc.)
Still I Rise

Paraphrase: Translate the poem into your own words on a literal level. Look for complete thoughts and
look up unfamiliar words.
Connotation: Examine the poem for meaning beyond the literal. Look for figurative language, imagery,
and sound elements.

Attitude/Tone: Notice the speaker’s tone and attitude. Sarcasm? Humor? Anger?
Shift: Note any shifts or changes in speaker or attitude. Look for key words, time change, and
punctuation.
Theme: Briefly sate in your own words what the poem is about (subject), then what the poet is saying
about the subject (theme.)

1. How do Maya Angelou and Melinda Sordino’s attitudes towards oppression/victimization differ?
How are they similar? Use specific lines from the poem to support your answer.
2. In what ways were Melinda and Maya similarly mistreated? Use specific lines from the poem to
support our answer. (You are encouraged to use quotations from Speak, as well!)
3. How does the repetition of “I’ll rise” throughout the poem enhance its meaning? Can you recall
any thoughts of Melinda’s that recur throughout the novel?
