Problem 1.

Product B is to be produced in a liquid phase reaction occurring in an adiabatically stirred tank

reactor with a constant volume of 150 gal. The following reactions take place:
k1
𝑘𝐽
2𝐴 → 𝐵 + 𝐶 ∆𝐻1 = −50
𝑚𝑜𝑙
k2 𝑘𝐽
𝐵 →𝐷 ∆𝐻2 = 30
𝑚𝑜𝑙
The rate constants for the reactions are expressed as the following (T in Kelvins):
−21500
𝑘1 = 2.1𝑥1019 𝑒 𝑇 [ 𝑚𝑖𝑛−1 ]
−10000
𝑘2 = 1.2𝑥1015 𝑒 𝑇 [ 𝑚𝑖𝑛−1 ]

The following additional information are also given:

i. Initial steady-state conditions:

𝑙𝑏𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒
𝑇̅ = 750 𝐶, 𝑐̅𝐴 = 3.25
𝑓𝑡 3
𝑔𝑎𝑙
𝑞 = 25 = 𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟
𝑚𝑖𝑛
ii. Physical property data for the mixture at the initial steady-state conditions:
𝑘𝐽 𝑙𝑏
𝐶𝑝 = 2.67 0 , 𝜌 = 60 3
𝑙𝑏 𝐶 𝑓𝑡

a. Derive a transfer function relating the outlet concentration of B to the inlet concentration
of A.
b. Derive a transfer function relating the outlet concentration of B to the input temperature.
c. For both cases, simplify the transfer functions by making a first-order approximation and
show that the approximation is valid.
d. Using the simplified transfer function, determine the new steady-state outlet
𝑙𝑏𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒 𝐴
concentration of B if a step input change of 5 𝑓𝑡 3
is used.
e. What is the maximum concentration of B if a step input change of 800C is made, but is
only held at this value for 1 minute, after which it is returned to its initial value? (using
the simplified transfer function)
