DAILY PLAN
Lesson Title: Animal masks Grade Level: 1st grade

S & S Statements: This lesson is introductory to learning how to plan a design while paying attention
to proportion and detail. The students will be given creative freedom to
choose what animal they want to incorporate into a mask of themselves.

Concepts and Skills: Students will be able to design a mask portraying themselves as a specific
animal by paying attention to distinctive characteristics of the animal. They will
translate the animal features into geometric shapes that reflect the African
style of animal masks.

Vocabulary: Design, proportion, characteristics, geometric

Purpose of Lesson (Overall Lesson Objective): After viewing a PowerPoint presentation providing
examples of incorporating animal characteristics into a mask, students will be given newsprint,
construction paper, glue sticks, and coloring materials to design their animal mask.

Objectives: Students will carefully plan a detailed design of a mask using coloring materials and
construction paper while incorporating accurate animal characteristics. They will be accurately
translate animal features into geometric shapes as well as pay attention to the proportions of their
mask so it properly fits their face.

Assessment Criteria:
1. Accurately design a mask proportionate to the face.
2. Incorporate important animal characteristics to their mask.
3. Adequately provide detail of the animal they are portraying in their mask.

Teaching Resources Needed to Support the Lesson:

A PowerPoint presentation will be provided with:
African masks; productive example of combining animal features with the human face
Animal faces; provides inspiration for what animal they want to portray
Different geometric shapes

Physical examples of our own newsprint design of an animal mask incorporating construction paper
and coloring materials to portray our animal of choice.

Art Materials Necessary for the Lesson: Newsprint, construction paper, glue stick, scissors, pencil,
coloring materials, paper plates
