variety of physical activities.

o Standard 5: The student exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical

Background Information:
This game is a stripped down modified version of baseball. The purpose of this activity is to work on the student’s
hand-eye coordination along with their throwing and catching ability.

Engagement:
Start off class by having the students do their warm-ups to help them burn off some energy to help them focus. After that ask
students if they have ever played baseball. Talk about the similarities between bean bag handball and regular baseball.
Explain the rules of the game, how to keep score and the field setup. Example: How do you get a runner out?

Exploration:
o First step is to have the students come and sit down in their assigned spots.
o Do the regular class warm-ups includes, 5 laps
o Sit down and explain the rules.
1. Field setup (the bases)
2. Where batter hits from and how to hit the ball
3. Where the rest of the players up to bat stand (runners)
4. How to end the batter's turn (dead ball)
5. How to score
6. How to keep score
o Field Setup/Batter and runners
A. Place 4 cones in a square
B. Place one bean bag on top of each cone
C. The batter stands in the middle of home plate and first base
D. The other players waiting to bat (runners) stand in front of first base
E. The players in the outfield spread out inside the cones
o How to score
The person up to bat will bounce the ball off the floor and hit it with their hand. Once they hit the ball they will run
around the outside of the bases. As soon as the batter passes home plate the next runner in line will take off around
the bases until the team in the outfield forces a dead ball. The batting team continues running the bases until a
dead ball is forced. Every time a runner passes home plate that counts as a completed run. You score one point per
runner. If a runner fails to run around the outside of a base that run does not count. After the team in the outfield
force a dead ball, the next batter steps up to hit. Every player on the offense gets a chance to hit.
o Dead ball
To force a dead ball the team in the outfield must pass the ball to a teammate standing at a base. Once the player
standing at a base successfully catches the ball they will knock the bean bag off the base with their hand or by
hitting it with the ball. Once all the bean bags have been knocked off the cones the team will yell dead ball letting

the offense know their batter is out. No players in the outfield can run with the ball in their hand! If you have the
ball in your hand you are only allowed to move in a circle on one pivot foot just like in basketball. If a player is
caught taking a step towards a base and knocks a bean bag off they must pass the ball to another person, then place
the bean bag back on the cone before the ball can be passed back to them to be able to knock the bean bag off.
o Scoring
A. Each time a runner passes home plate that counts as 1 score/point
B. When the team that started in the outfield is up to bat instead of adding up their score each time a
runner scores they will subtract a point from the other teams score until they reach zero. Once they
reach zero then they add up their score.
C. Example – team one scores 7 points and team two scores 9. 9 minus 7 = 2 so the final score would
be 2 – 0 and team two would be the winners.
D. Each team only gets one turn up to bat.
o Check for understanding
A. Field setup (bases, where the batter stands, where runners stand)
B. How to get an out (dead ball)
C. How to move the ball around
D. How to score and keep score
o Split class into three groups (4 players per team)

Closure:
The learning that occurred in this lesson is the concepts of Baseball and how to use your teammates and use effective
communication. They will also be able to pass, catch, and hit a ball.

Evaluation:
Students will be assessed through observation during the activity, positive reinforcement and corrective feedback as necessary to
ensure.
o Passing the ball using correct form/technique during game situations.
o Catching the ball with correct form/technique in game situations
o Apply skills, rules, and strategies during a game situation
o Display effective communication, teamwork, and sportsmanship during activity by providing encouragement to
others.

Differentiation:
