Detailed knowledge of and practice with the hundred chart leads to skilled use of
mental math for addition and subtraction. The tens and ones spinners in this set also
provide extra reinforcement for place value. Use these hundred charts throughout the
year in whole group lessons with your document camera, for small group differentiation,
for buddy games, and in math centers.
Suggestions for use: Model the first set of games by playing “The Class vs. The
Teacher” on the completed hundred chart using your document camera.
Each team will need a different colored marker. Take turns spinning the
included tens and ones spinners to determine the number to be circled.
The first team/player to circle 5 numbers in a row in any direction is the
winner. When your students play this game with buddies or in math centers,
print the colored board on cardstock and laminate for repeated use. The
board can also be put in a plastic sleeve so it can be erased and reused.
Model the second set of games as a whole class activity, too. For
these games, players spin the spinners; if the space is empty, they write in
the number. If the space is not empty, the player’s turn is over and the other
player spins. The first player to fill in 20 numbers is the winner.
To make the spinners, print on cardstock and laminate. To assemble
as a spinner, use a paperclip over the head of a brad in the center, or show
your students how to spin using the point of a pencil and a paperclip.
