Q17 Please provide comments in regards to the student teacher's strengths and areas for improvement.

Strengths from my classroom observation:

Ms. Cordero is respectful to the students and presents herself in a calm demeanor. She provided a review for the students and verbally
walked the students through previous objectives taught, using a paper sort of characteristics of the Northern States and the Southern
States during the Civil War. The textbook was used to teach most of the new and reviewed material for the 40 minute Social Studies
lesson. She introduced new objectives using the textbook and incorporated some cross-curricular objectives by posing questions about
the use of text features when looking at the social studies book. She also incorporated a couple of cause and effect scenarios from the
Social Studies material. Ms. Cordero knew the social studies content and posed many questions stems to students to help them
understand the history material. Choral answer was given, and students were given the opportunity to chime in as they knew an answer
to her questions. The use of a sort is a great hands on activity for students to visually sort ideas and concepts. Students were well
behaved and respectful during the classroom discussion.

Areas for Improvement for the lesson:

Always begin your lesson with a clear purpose to the activity. Begin with the end in mind: What do you want your students to gain after
the lesson? What is the "big idea" of the lesson?
During the classroom open discussion, many of the same students answered your questions about the text. Think about how can can
you increase student engagement and active participation from all students. Also, think about how you can be sure that all students are
understanding the objectives that you are teaching for the lesson. Continue to strive towards using a variety of resources that will help
spark the interest of the students as you teach them the curriculum. Think about how you can stretch the students and provide them
more opportunities for critical thinking.

Thank you!
