Goal(s): TLW identify the main idea.

TLW using supporting details when finding the main idea.

Materials/Resources/Technology needs:
 Main idea anchor chart
 Main Idea Boot Camp by Two Sharp Pencils (Teachers Pay Teachers)
 Small passages
 Main Idea Ice Cream Cones
 Passage
 Create mini two piece puzzles (main idea on one short passage on the other)
Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event: Teach the main idea chant.
“I don’t know what you’ve been told
Main Idea is better than gold
It tells you what it’s all about
Main Idea will help you out
To…comprehend
The…passage
What… it’s…all…about…
Oorah!”

Teaching/ Learning Procedures: Teach Students what main idea is using the main idea
anchor chart. Practice finding out the main idea from a few small passages. Students should help
find the main idea using supporting details.
Formative Check (ongoing or specific): Break up into centers to work on different skills
to find the main idea. 1. Main Idea ice cream cones. 2. Create a web identifying the main idea
and 3 supporting details. 3. Main Idea puzzles.

Reteach (alternative used as needed): Have a read aloud and then have students help find
the main idea using their white boards. Check for understanding by having students determine
what a supporting detail is vs what the overall main idea is.

Closure: Put a passage on the board and have students write the main idea on a sticky
note as an exit ticket.

Assessment/Summative Evaluation: Have students complete a main idea sticky note mat
based on a short story.

Modifications/Notes:
Dyslexia: Have pictures to go with the passages, student can do their summative assessments
orally and may have more time to read the passages.
Autism: Instead of having to write out the main idea on the summative assessment, student will
be given answer choices.
Visual Impairment: Have the assignments on larger and darker print for the student. Front row
seating for group assignments. Pair with a strong reader who can read to student when they have
difficulty seeing the words.
