Teaching Practice Reflection #2

In reflection on my second teaching practise at an external school, I would say that the lesson was well

received.

There were some challenges faced as I was responsible for hosting this week but was unable to do so as a

result of facility problems at my school. Therefore, I was now lined up to teach in lieu of the teacher who

was now host. This left me with less time to prepare but that was not much of an issue. I conceptualised

my lesson and began the preparation process.

This session was not as nerve wrecking as the first. I am yet to ascertain the main factor, but I think that

it was a combination of factors, the first being the fact that the school was a familiar environment having

taught there for a year. Secondly, this being my second session, may have contributed to the lack of

nervousness. At my first teaching practise, the situation was unfamiliar and I did not know whether or

not my methods were up to standard, neither did I know the reaction that I would have gotten from the

students.

At this session some of the students were familiar with me and very eager to participate in the session. I

was anxious about such as I hoped the familiarity didn’t breed contempt.
Usually students are not themselves when a strange teacher is conducting the class and they are joined by

other teachers. However, when they are familiar with the teacher they feel comfortable and they may

disrupt the class. I guess this anxiety is stemmed from my past experience with some of the students at

the form two level, when they were less mature and quite disruptive. Gladly, they students were

cooperative and well behaved.

In reflecting on the delivery of the lesson, I felt comfortable with my effort and the students grasped the

concepts. There are a number of objectives I think could have been done differently as I reflect. I should

have presented the chart with the catch phrase to remembering the lesson closer to the beginning and

again at the end to reinforce learning.

I was excited about the group activity but the task should have been to number the forms of energy from

least to most applicable to our country and to justify the ranking. This would have assisted in engaging

their higher order thinking skills.

In conceptualising the lesson I was quite uncertain about their pre knowledge and what aspects to include.

I didn’t want to confuse them and I was concerned about the time allotted for delivery.

Overall the students understood the concepts and the lesson provided them with a basic understanding of

the alternative sources of energy. They were given a hand out with in depth information on each source.

In moving forward I will spend some more time planning the group activity and the assessment,

particularly for the upper level classes. I enjoyed the session and it was a delight to see some my former

students learning from me again.
