In her doctoral thesis Klaus analyzes how Sahagún and Juan Bautista
attempted, in Advent and Christmas sermons, to make the Christian
religion intelligible to the Nahuas in Central Mexico. The work focuses
on the content of the sermons and on the language used to "Nahuatize"
Christianity. She also deals with the changes in the teaching the doctrine
during the 16th century. The Nahuatl sermons are also compared with
Franciscan sermons from Spain. In doing so the author studies the
elements which were used for teaching the doctrine to the Nahua
population.
The analysis of this type of texts also opens new perspectives for as-
sessing the Franciscans' work in Mexico.

Markt Schwaben 2000 (4°, 178 pp.)
The role of the Eastern slopes of the Bolivian Andes has been difficult
to understand until today, especially with respect to its relationship to
the highlands. Traditionally the Eastern foothills have been interpreted
as a frontier between the highland and Amazonian peoples, a zone
which impeded the eastward expansion of the Inca state.
This book aims at analysing the economic basis of the Yunga region,
the role of certain products like coca and maize, as well as this area’s
relationship to the Lake Titicaca region. This is achieved through the
study of the Songo and Chucuito visitas, both administrative documents
dating from the 16th century. Especially in the case of Chucuito the
system of archipiélagos has been regarded as an economic adaptation
produced by the mountain polities in order to cope with geographical
disadvantages. However, the comparative reading of the two visitas
shows that these archipiélagos or colonies should be seen as
instruments of political power in a boader sense, while on the household
or ayllu level other mechanisms of interchange were in use in order to
provide the highland groups with the desired products.

River of Fleece - River of Song: Singing to the Animals, an
Andean Poetics of Creation
Markt Schwaben 2002 (4°, 478 pp.)
This book examines Andean oral tradition from the point of view
of the social actors involved: the women weaver-herders of
Qaqachaka, an Aymara-speaking ayllu community in the Southern
Andes. Its detailed description of their daily lives contributes to
ethnographies of herders and weavers; its approach to Andean
ethnohistory, foregrounding oral tradition, reveals that weaving
and song are important alternative textual sources that have been
unconsidered until now; and its attention to verbal art develops
new directions in Aymara poetics, distinguishing it from Western
poetical traditions.
The book centers on one specific genre, the “songs to the
animals”; song transcriptions in the original Aymara, with English
translations, include those to the principle Andean camelids, llama
and alpaca, as well as to many Old World animals introduced into
the region: sheep and goats, donkeys and mules, horses and oxen.
Performance contexts include the ceremonies of marking and
mating the animals, songs sung on the tambo waystations, at the
tax-gathering ceremonies, and first plowing.
At a practical level, the book relates the tradition of singing to the
animals to weaving activities, and the production of fleece. It
emphasises how the songs, as repositories of Andean knowledge,
express the women singers’ on-going relationship with their
surrounding ecology, mediated by certain ayllu birds named in the
songs, that are considered to be the spirit muses of herd and fleece
creation.
At a theoretical level, the book applies critically to the Andes
Derrida’s notion of “grammatology” (the study of writing
systems), seeking to identify the kind of woven units that might be
considered Andean “writing,” and the sung formulas and episodes
that might constitute an Andean narrative “grammar.” The authors
argue that, unlike Western writing based in paper and ink, which
is predominantly under the charge of men, Andean woven textual
elements are reproduced through these women’s songs. In
practice, the musical expression of female corporality uses voice
quality, inspirational devices, and regional taxonomies of song
genres, to unravel song like colored fleece, as a vital creative
medium of their woven world.

situiert; sie werden dann auf ihren möglichen Entstehungsprozess hin untersucht;

in Guatemala.
Garifuna-Gemeinde in Guatemala vorgestellt.
Garinagu in Guatemala diskutiert.
Rolle spielen hierin politische Organisationen? Ihre traditionellen Feste und
religiösen Rituale stehen dabei im Zentrum ihrer transnationalen Praktiken.
Life Experiences Between „Here“ and „There“
Transnational Migration and Change of the Garinagu in Guatemala and New
York
Maren Mohr de Collado
Being of Afro-Amerindian origin, the Garinagu or Garifuna live in dwellings along
the Central American coast of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Since
the 1960ies, they have increasingly emigrated to the big cities of the United States,
mainly to New York and Miami, in search of new working opportunities. The
Garifuna migrants in the United States actually form an even larger community than
33
their counterpart in Guatemala. What socio-cultural and economic effects does this
migration have on the sending society in Central America as well as on the
migratory community in the United States? This study is based on empiric material
collected by the author in Guatemala and the United States in 1999 and 2000.
In order to set a theoretical frame for the following investigation, the first part of
this work exposes the decisive reasons for the rise of worldwide transnational
migratory practises. The second part deals with the ethnogenesis of the Garinagu on
the Lesser Antilles and their migratory history on the coast of Central America. A
specificly chosen Garifuna community in Guatemala will afterwards be presented.
In which way is the daily life of this community influenced by the family members
living in the United States? The aim is to discuss the resulting social change of this
community from an economical, social-structural and cultural viewpoint.
The third part describes the Guatemalan Garifuna migratory community in New
York. Although most of the migrants live in the USA for decades, their home
village is ever present in their daily life. In the centerstage of the study is an analysis
of the multiform and dynamic relationships, the migrants maintained over the
generations with their Guatemalan sending society. The last part of the dissertation
includes an investigation of actual social phenomenons of the Garinagu in the USA
and Guatemala. How do the Garinagu define their ethnic identity and what role do
political organizations play in this transnational context? The vivid traditional
celebrations of this people as well as the religious rituals play a central part in their
transnational practices.

The present grammar had its origin in a missionary context. When the author
(Leslie Hoggarth, 1909-2003) went out to Peru in 1932 with the Evangelical Union
of South America (now Latin Link), he worked above all in the Departments of
Cuzco and Puno, trying to get a deeper understanding of the people who spoke
Quechua and their culture. It was “in the field” that Leslie Hoggarth started to make
grammatical notes, which he began to edit and rework later, when he went back to
Britain and took up teaching the Quechua language at the Centre for Latin
American Linguistic Studies at St Andrews Unversity (Scotland). As the contents of
the study were meant to be ‘notes’ for teaching, they were not structured in a
grammatically systematic way, but rather according to didactic criteria. In order to
make this study an easily manageable manual, it has been ordered according to
modern formal grammatical categories, creating three main sections (the verbal
system, the nominal system, and discourse suffixes and particles). The grammar
finishes with a small sample of Quechua texts collected by the author; two of these
texts are accompanied by audio files.
