Basic Triangle Congruence Lesson Plan

Description of Resource: This lesson plan allows students to explore and begin developing their understanding
of triangle congruence. This lesson focuses more on the triangle congruent theorems of Side-Side-Side (SSS)
and Side-Angle-Side (SAS)

Technical & Cost considerations: The lesson is free to access since it is in the format of a PDF. The lesson does
require materials in order to perform the interactive aspect of the lesson, however, most can be obtained at little cost.

Evaluation
1. Learning Activity Types

 LA-Practice - practicing for fluency-.

 LA-Present - (read or attend to) presentation of new content/ideas- Students begin to view triangles in
terms on congruence and represent triangles using real world items.
o LA-Present-Demo - demonstration- Teacher can demonstrate the two triangle congruent theorems
of SSS and SAS.
o LA-Present-Explain - explanation- Opportunity for teacher explain triangle congruence theorems.
 LA-Explore - exploring/investigating mathematical ideas- Through interactive activity, students explore the
congruence of triangles.
 LA-Apply - applying mathematics to problems and situations- This lesson uses the worksheets as a form of
assessment. Students apply their understanding that was gained through the activity.
2. What mathematics is being learned?

Standards
Common Core State Standards – Mathematics
Grade 8, Geometry

 CCSS.Math.Content.HSG.CO.B.7
Use the definition of congruence in terms of rigid motions to show that two triangles are congruent if and
only if corresponding pairs of sides and corresponding pairs of angles are congruent.
 CCSS.Math.Content.HSG.CO.B.8
Explain how the criteria for triangle congruence (ASA, SAS, and SSS) follow from the definition of
congruence in terms of rigid motions.

Proficiency Strands

 conceptual understanding- Through interactive activities, students are developing conceptual

understanding. Students discover and explore when triangles are proven to be congruent when using the
theorems of SSS and SAS.
 adaptive reasoning- Students use logical thought to use previously learned content to develop new ideas
and understanding of concepts presented.

6. Additional Comments
I really liked how this lesson incorporated an interactive aspect to help students develop understanding of triangle
congruency. In addition, I liked that the lesson gave opportunity for students to work collaboratively in order to
build understanding. I would have liked the lesson to involve ASA and AAS theorems.
