Lesson Plan

Lesson : Period 3

Aim :

To study the chemical reactions of Period 3 elements and their oxides

Learning Outcomes :

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to :

• describe the reactions of Period 3 elements with oxygen

• interpret the ability of elements to act as oxidising and reducing agents

• describe the reactions of Period 3 elements with water

• describe and explain the acid-base properties of oxides of Period 3 elements

Assumed prior knowledge :

Students should already be familiar with :

1. the names and symbols of the elements in Period 3

2. the concept of acids and bases.

Underlying Principles

1. Making the invisible, visible.

2. Enabling students to know what to look for.

Differentiation

Questions in the student notes are designed to enable all students to complete the activity.
The pop-up answers are provided for the students to view when they have considered their
responses. Worksheet questions include questions that require recall, understanding and
application of the new concepts learned.

Development of Lesson :

No. Steps Strategy Resources

1 Set Induction.
(Ascertaining prior • Teacher to get students to recall names
knowledge and and symbols of the elements in Period 3.
introducing lesson • Teacher to point out lesson objectives of
topic for the day). the day.

2 Student Activity Teacher to go through Activities 1 and 2 • Courseware

with the students.

Activity 1 : Reaction with oxygen

Students get to view how the elements of

Period 3 react at different rates with
oxygen and the products obtained.

Activity 2 : Reaction with water

Students get to view how the elements of

Period 3 react at different rates with water
and the products obtained.

Activity 3 : Acid-base properties

of the oxides

Students get to view how the acid-base

properties of the oxides of the elements
vary across Period 3.

3 Evaluation • Students to answer questions in the • Worksheet

student worksheet on their own.

4 Extension activity • Students to read up reference materials • References

on their own.
